General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsA thought about cockroaches. We think of them as ubiquitous, everywhere, all the time.
Then I read somewhere that central heating is to blame for that. Without it, they couldn't live in very
cold climates. (It wasn't a scientific journal or something like that.)
If that is true, then maybe some decades ago, people in cold areas had had no experience with them (Cockroaches, I mean.)
Anybody from Canada, AK, states near the Canada border, Norway, etc., know about this?
Edited to add: I guess cockroaches live in arid areas, too? Such as the Southwest.

(8,556 posts)I think it was called 'After Humans,' or something like that. They talked about some of the species that depend on humans to sustain their numbers, like seagulls, rats, and roaches, etc.
I think it was argued that roaches would probably retreat from colder climates but remain in the warmer areas.

(34,179 posts)First, their metabolism slows down as temperatures drop, and they can even survive a light frost above ground. However in the winter time they generally burrow down and hibernate, coming up when it warms up.
Roaches can survive virtually anything, including surviving a couple of ice ages.

Beyond that, nada. Not growing up in Ohio, nor living in NJ, Las Vegas or CA (north & south). No roaches.
BTW - no mosquitoes out West, either. They were a real problem in the East.
