Trump himself tweeted that the screwup by him was just a "sheriff's badge."
The guy won't even say "Oops..."

(7,768 posts)Dump and company claiming it's a sheriff's badge is beyond pathetic.
This really of reminds me of another blatant, hate-filled poster by a racist P.O.S. "That isn't a cross-hair, it's a surveyor marker" (targeting Gabby Gifford's district and others)

(22,025 posts)It's made of two interlocking triangles:
The Israeli flag has a blue Star of David on a white field. But I believe that the color is unimportant and it's the outlined triangles that distinguish the Star of David from just a six-pointed star.
Importantly, the shape- whether in outline or filled in- is very strongly associated with the Hebrew tradition and Jewish religion. It's nearly impossible to accept the excuses coming from the Trump Campaign. How could they not realize what they were implying? It's as if they used a swastika or a cross and said they were just geometric figures. They just got caught making a blatantly anti-semitic image and caved when they got called on it.
Donald Trump is a liar and a coward. He's also an idiot.

(35,293 posts)"Star of David" isn't the first thing that came to mind. Had to think for what it most reminded me of. So familiar, yet what was the symbol symbolizing ... Then I got it.
Police benevolent association stickers and sheriff's badges. (Also general weirdness on my part, since sometimes when putting a star next to something I'll scrap the pentagram and doing a 6- or 8-pointed star just for the heck of it.)
"Star of David"? Went back to the red-emblazoned image and with a bit of chagrin shrugged, "Oh, yeah. That."
Now, keep in mind that every Saturday I sit for stand for a couple of hours behind men who are wearing tallit and kippas with stars of David on them at a messianic synagogue, intoning the Ma Tovu and Shema' in Hebrew and in English, watching the Torah procession and listening to the oleh read the parashot. So it's not like I haven't see a Magen David fairly recently. (Not my choice, but my wife's choice. People keep waiting for me to start wearing tzitzit. Not gonna happen.)
The magen David is strongly associated with Jewish tradition, but played a trivial to non-existent role in antiquity. The Rabbis even have little to say about it and it only really shows up in later centuries, and only long after that is interpreted as either the "seal of Solomon" or "the shield of David". It's like tying Shavuot in with the law giving at Mt. Sinai. The Mishna and Talmud are quiet in this regard, but later tradition is all we see and we project it back centuries or millennia more than we should.
It's also the kind of thing that you might not notice if you're not looking for it. It plays a part in Jewish tradition, but in Irish tradition it's not really identified with anything, as far as I know. (Then again, what do I know about Irish tradition. I'm a non-observant Gael, except for corned beef and cabbage ... even then I mostly miss St. Patrick's day because, well, I'm not Catholic.)

puhhhleeeease. with your in depth knowledge of Judaic symbolism, surely you might have remembered those silly old Nazis and the rich jews with money ruining the Weimar economy?
never heard about that connection, have you?

(36,257 posts)(Before the Nazis appropriated them, swastikas used to be seen more widely, being religious symbols in Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and some Native American religions. There's a nice long article at Wikipedia on the long, long history/protohistory of the swastika. I remember seeing swastikas embedded in the tilework of an old apartment building in Pittsburgh -- probably dating from the '20s or early '30s, before the swastika was stigmatized.
This ancient Roman mosaic uses both left- and right-facing swastikas:
The Nazis used the 'right-facing' swastika, which looks like it could be formed by superposing two jagged 'S's, as found in the SS insignia:
Whether this was intentional or not, it helps to remember which is which; the other form, the "ZZ" form, was not used by the Nazis but most people don't spot the difference. )

Weve been troubled by the tone of this campaign for the past six months, said Jonathan Greenblatt, national director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, also speaking to CNN.
The first time something like this happens, like the quote from [in fact attributed to] Mussolini, its called a mistake. The second time it happens, like you re-tweet from a white supremacist Twitter account, thats sloppy. But were now at the sixth or seventh time the Trump campaign has invoked bigotry or racism. Its a pattern thats perplexing, troubling and wrong.
