Donald Trump's 'Pocahontas' attack on Elizabeth Warren leaves GOP struggling to defend him
The furor over Trump's assaults on the impartiality of a Latino judge had just begun to subside when he lobbed two tweets Friday morning responding to Warren, who had lambasted him as a "thin-skinned, racist bully" in a speech the previous evening.
"Pocahontas is at it again!" Trump wrote in one. "Goofy Elizabeth Warren, one of the least productive U.S. Senators, has a nasty mouth." "No, seriously - Delete your account," Warren tweeted back. One of the senator's supporters secured Pocahontas.com and redirected it to Warren's campaign site. At a rally Friday night in Richmond, Virginia, Trump repeatedly called Warren "Pocahontas," prompting some in the crowd to break out in Indian war cries. The real estate developer has repeatedly invoked the 17th-century Native American figure to refer to Warren, an allusion to controversy about her heritage. The senator has said she grew up amid family stories about her Cherokee lineage, but that account has not been proved. Trump began going after Warren's claimed ancestry earlier this year, responding to the senator's repeated slams of him as a "loser" and a bully. "Who's that, the Indian?" he said at a March news conference when asked about Warren. "You mean the Indian?" http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-donald-trump-elizabeth-warren-pocahontas-20160610-story.html

The venue was only about 1/4 full, though the attendees were positioned behind him and on the sides, to give the appearance of a fuller house.

He's incapable of picking his battles, as his need to fight outweighs his common sense. This is, more than anything else, his Achilles heel.
Anybody who's watched Trump for a long time knows this. |

Many Oklahomans have a low percentage of Cherokee ancestry but are still considered a member of the tribe and are entitled to tribal medical benefits.
This is probably the case with Warren and she doesn't feel the need to explain herself to the likes of Donald Trump. |

Lots of families have stories about their ancestry. Half of it is usually bullshit.
But guess what? There's a whole lot of people who grew up without ancestry.com a click away. Actually researching a genealogy used to take a lot of work, a lot of shoe leather, and a lot of dead ends. My father spent two decades on it, and still got a lot of it wrong. But what we have since found out is that a lot of what "everyone in the family knew" was different from what it actually was. And she has addressed it directly - that's what she grew up believing because that's what she had been told. Big deal. It reminds me of birthers wanting Obama to "tell the truth" about where he was born. In point of fact, nobody has actual first-hand knowledge of where they were born. If you want to know where you were born, you believe what you are told, and what your birth certificate says. It's not like you personally remember your own birth, or have any reason to question what you are told about your lineage. |

54. Very good answer. My mom spent over 25 years researching 4 books of family genealogy...
And yes, family stories sometimes turned out to be different or just unverifiable. Was my father's great-grandfather really adopted by a family who lived in and worked a riverboat on the Ohio River? Did he take their name? Turns out probably not. She always thought his family was Irish, like hers, but a lot of French-Germans turned up. And she was never able to trace my father's family any further back than 1775 on the East Coast, which is when a lot of Ulstermen (Scots-Irish) came over, and they were Protestant, not Catholic.
She was a good researcher, and enjoyed this hobby immensely. |

52. No, but that's not what this nonsense is about
Their claim is that she had previously "lied" about having a distant Cherokee lineage - which is not all that unusual. The fact of the matter is that she had not lied, but it happened to be a family story that she had been told and was generally believed in the family. Like a lot of handed down family stories - it turned out not to be accurate. But the nut jobs just love making a big deal over it. |
