Zimmerman is being forced to sell the gun and other stuff to pay his legal bills. He has no money otherwise. The attorneys likely threatened to file a judgment which would mean a sheriff confiscating the gun and other possession for a public auction.

Zimmerman opted for a sale that he could control.
