If a candidate claims "God told me to run" or "God is on our side" ...

... and if "God's support" is the cornerstone of the campaign, and mentioned in every stump speech; and then that candidate (or party) loses, how's it explained? What do the candidate's supporters think?

Did God change his mind? Was God playing a joke? Was the candidate lying?

Do they fear that they (as a group) fail God's test of faith and His call-to-action?

Fortunately for most of them, they are just pandering to fools.

This means that, to Ted, the use that his Lord picked out for him was to completely destroy the Republican Party as we know it while gettin’ dusted by a carnie-handed mango man.

Guys, stuff like that makes me wanna rethink my stance on God!

I mean, not really, on account of mah brain workin’, but still!

In the late 1950s social psychologist Leon Festinger followed around a doomsday cult led by Dorothy Martin. When the day of reckoning came and went without incident, Festinger was shocked to find that the fact that the world didn't end as predicted actually strengthened the resolve of Martin and her disciples.

Martin claimed that the world had been spared because of the "force of Good and light" that the group members had spread throughout the world. Rather than abandoning their discredited beliefs, group members adhered to them even more strongly and began proselytizing with fervor.

... this god-thing told them to run, he never said doo-dad about winning. As for "God is on our side" and other such assertions, they are not to be construed as direct messages.

It can't be God's fault. This is just the unworthy vessel who could not fulfill his responsibility to carry out God's plan and lacked sufficient faith to move the Almighty to intervene. Scan the Bible to see what happens when prophecy fails. It's always the human's fault, never the fault of the omniscient omnipotent chap whose idea it supposedly was.

In fact, I would prefer it if they all shut up about how religious they are. For some, it comes off a completely phony. In any case, it is a major turnoff.
