RiverNoord
(1,150 posts)Its primary proper use is to identify armed opposition during a military conflict. It is also sometimes used to describe internal pressures experienced by a person that the person regards as something approximating a mortal foe. Intense hatred is sometimes described as an enemy by the person experiencing it.
'Opponent' is a general-purpose description used to identify opposing parties in much lower-intensity conflicts, such as sports, games, and political contests. Generally, opponents are choosing to take part in an activity that requires opposition for it to even exist. It's really hard, for example, to play a game of baseball with only one team. It's also very difficult to hold an election with only one person to vote for.
If we are actually divided up into friend and foe, enemy and friendly, over an election, then the country should be nearing open civil war.
I don't quite think that's the case.
Politics isn't that simple. Government isn't that simple. And every person who regards political opponents as 'enemies' (other than, again, during open civil war) is not only taking the competitive aspect of the political process much too seriously, she/he is also dehumanizing large numbers fellow citizens, much like the implementation of wartime propaganda.
Now, I'll admit that Donald Trump is already at a point where even the slightest dehumanization could result in him becoming a different species. But he isn't literally leading an army to seize control of the White House by force.
I would find a Donald Trump presidency to be bizarre and disturbing, and I'd probably make a habit of sending a letter of apology every day to a different country.
But if Donald Trump is 'the enemy,' then so is everyone who would vote for him. And yet, all we're actually doing is holding organized elections to fill government office vacancies.
Just a little something to chew over, I hope.

He will not have anyone supporting him. Everyone is bought and paid for. Like it or not, that's how our system works. We barter. You give up some things to have others. That's how they work. AgadorSparticus
(7,963 posts)I can sympathize with you to some degree. I make no claim that Hillary is a saint. I see a very astute politician that has learned to be adept in what she does with all the hate and opposition that has always swirled around her.
I don't think she is perfect and I certainly don't think she is evil. She stands politically closer to what I believe than anyone on the right. Is it exactly what I believe? Hell no. But that is our system. I hope and pray for changes from the bottom up. I don't think the revolution is going away. We have work to do on a local and state leve and I think it coming.
But to demonize the best candidate we've got for the job at this point in time, is counterproductive to progressive change. I see some very foolhardy decisions based on emotions. Not surprising. People make terrible decisions when they are driven by anger or fear.

(1,150 posts)If you mean for your comments to be relevant in terms of describing reality, then I would ask that you consider this.
I'm 45 years old. I've voted for Democrats exclusively all my adult life. I don't 'hate' Hillary Clinton - I've never met her or any member of her family, and actual hate is pretty hard to bear against someone you've never met who hasn't directly, personally harmed someone you care about.
I'm also not 'blinded,' although I had to finally go with bifocals (part time only) this year, after accidentally crunching my prior pair of eyeglasses.
I don't think I'm 'indignant' about anything at the present time. I'm pretty sure I was last night when the Ethiopians built a mind-blowing 4 world wonders exactly one turn before my Shoshone people were to finish theirs. 4 times! It's happened twice in one game before, but never even 3 times during a game that I can recall. I was pretty indignant at Civilization V, swore a bit, and shut down the game and my computer.
But I decided long before Bernie Sanders declared his candidacy that I would not require myself to vote for Hillary Clinton if she became the Democratic nominee for the presidency. Before Sanders declared his candidacy, it was looking like it was already a done deal.
My reasons, well if you've actually listened to others with similar positions, you've probably heard them all at one time or another. But they don't have anything to do with hatred. It really just boils down this - I believe that the Democratic party, my party, is becoming extremely corrupt, and I also believe that the candidacy of Hillary Clinton is a symptom of that corruption. I've decided that it's OK for me to choose not to provide tacit support for that process of corruption by voting for her to become the President of the United States. As a citizen of the United States of America, I do not believe that I am under any obligation to vote for candidates for office who I believe will further contribute to government corruption. It really should be the other way around.
You think I'm wrong. Or delusional. Or, maybe, so blinded by hate and indignancy that I can't even perceive for myself whether I'm hateful or indignant. But, please, at least think that last sentence over a bit. I'm OK with people believing I'm wrong about something like this. Maybe I am. I don't think so, but it's certainly possible. But, by stating that I will not vote for Hillary Clinton to become the next President of the United States, I appear to be grouped into your 'blinded by their hate' group. And, really, that's kind of offensive.
AgadorSparticus
(7,963 posts)Of that corruption. But who is the most progressive candidate come November for the presidency? If you think it is Trump, we are done talking. If you think it is Cruz....I don't know. I have no words for that. I will just let you get back to your gripping ethiopian/shishone adventure.
Like it or not, the choice is going to be either Hillary OR Trump. That is the reality. Not Bernie or Jill Stein or anyone else. So vote or don't vote. That is certainly your prerogative. I guess I was raised that it is my civic responsibility to partake in this process. Just as it is my responsibility to serve jury duty. Even when it is a grave inconvenience or even if I truly don't believe in the integrity of that voting process, I always show up and do my part. Even if I can't control all of the process, I can certainly control what I do. If we want change, we need to be a part of it. You want to see the government move left? Organize and be a part of the grassroots movement to gain more voice in the government. That movement to the left will not come from a singular vote for potus. It will come from bottom up politics. Look at booger eater Ted. I know it is hard to look at that face, but try for me. PRIME example of bottom up politics. We need to do THAT.
And while you clearly may not exercise hatred for Hillary, I see it all the time on DU. Just go to GD . It is on magnificent display just about every night. If I have a glass of wine first, it's not so bad. Even the double standard gets less noticeable.
Here's what I propose: for the sake of everyone's sanity, Bernie supporters stop posting "Hillary is evil" and "I will never vote for Hillary" posts and Hillary supporters will stop posting that "Bernie is FOS" and "The primaries ate over" threads.
RiverNoord
(1,150 posts)If there was some sort of 'joint sponsorship of a proposal' mechanism on DU, I'd be happy to join you. I'm at work, and I really ought to not be doing this now (a bit of corruption of my own as the IT manager...).
However, I think the proposal is a great idea, so when I get home sometime late in the evening as usual, I'll think the prospect through. And if you have any ideas on how to make a joint pitch like that and actually get people to add their screen names to replies in assent, please let me know .

Mrs. Clinton's behavior in that video is most inappropriate. First of all, my mother taught me that grave dancing is something a cultivated person does not do, and I still think Mom was right, as she was so often. Second, Hillary's dirty little war in Libya didn't work out that well, and Libya is worse off now than it was in 2010, before its civil war started. Granted, it isn't the first time in recent history the US fucked up the overthrow a brutal dictator in the Middle East and made things worse, but one would think she would have learned something from the first instance. Apparently, she didn't.

(3,714 posts)Libya: Ten Things About Gaddafi They Dont Want You to Know | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization
What do you think of when you hear the name Colonel Gaddafi? Tyrant? Dictator? Terrorist? Well, a national citizen of Libya may disagree but we want you to decide.
For 41 years until his demise in October 2011, Muammar Gaddafi did some truly amazing things for his country and repeatedly tried to unite and empower the whole of Africa.
So despite what youve heard on the radio, seen in the media or on the TV, Gaddafi did some powerful things that are not characteristic of a vicious dictator as portrayed by the western media.
Here are ten things Gaddafi did for Libya that you may not know about
1. In Libya a home is considered a natural human right
...
2. Education and medical treatment were all free
...
3. Gaddafi carried out the worlds largest irrigation project
...
4. It was free to start a farming business
...
5. A bursary was given to mothers with newborn babies
...
6. Electricity was free
...
7. Cheap petrol
...
8. Gaddafi raised the level of education
...
9. Libya had Its own state bank
...
10. The gold dinar
Before the fall of Tripoli and his untimely demise, Gaddafi was trying to introduce a single African currency linked to gold. Following in the foot steps of the late great pioneer Marcus Garvey who first coined the term United States of Africa. Gaddafi wanted to introduce and only trade in the African gold Dinar a move which would have thrown the world economy into chaos.
The Dinar was widely opposed by the elite of todays society and who could blame them. African nations would have finally had the power to bring itself out of debt and poverty and only trade in this precious commodity. They would have been able to finally say no to external exploitation and charge whatever they felt suitable for precious resources. It has been said that the gold Dinar was the real reason for the NATO led rebellion, in a bid to oust the outspoken leader.
