(31,849 posts)I asked him what Houston did to Mother Nature to make her try so hard, and so repeatedly, to wash it off the face of the Earth?

(178 posts)I did it anyway. It sank into the swamp. The second one burned down, fell over then sank into the swamp. But the third one stayed!

(5,128 posts)Paved over nature. Natural watershed eliminated. Massive flooding ensues.....
Not nice to fool with Mother Nature. She will strike back in most amazing ways.......

(268,930 posts)a converted swamp - I fear three things for nearly 500,000 people, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes.

(62,517 posts)this is technically a 500 year flood event.
Sadly, these "500 year flood events" are coming a hell of a lot sooner than 500 year cycles.
Houston has been victim to increasingly bad flood events for the last 15 years.
each year shows a new flood event.
this one just happens to be really bad.
here in Austin, the spring rains have been getting more intense every year.
malaise
(268,930 posts)I thought that was last year.
What's amazing is Abbott's state of emergency - he wants to secede and collect Federal money?

(82,849 posts)We get pea-sized hail from time to time in my neck of the woods, but what do people do about the really big hail like what's pictured here? Is there enough notice of big hail to get your vehicle inside a garage? Obviously there's not much that can be done about lawn furniture or that fence, and you sure don't want to go outside while it's coming down unless you're a big fan of concussions.
Put me down for "not moving to Texas anytime soon."

(53,410 posts)You can't predict it.
Large hail starts as small hail but instead of just coming down it gets pushed back up through rain and more and more moisture freezes on it. Then finally it gets too heavy for the updraft to push it up again so it falls to earth.

(30,151 posts)But in this case the storm turned 180degree from North to South and caught people...
We do have a good siren system in most Texas cities

(82,849 posts)Weather can be unpredictable, but if I got even a couple of minutes' head start, I think I'd try to get my car under cover if I could. Those big hailstones don't play around.
