I saw him in 85 for the Born in the USA tour with a pretty skeptical attitude. I left a fan. My buddy saw him a few weeks ago for the first time and finally understood why I praised his live act so much.

I can hardly wait to vote out McCrory in November. Since I live in Chapel Hill--that oasis of blue--my state Rep and Senator are Dems who did
not support this hateful legislation.
I'm a gay Carolinian, and I sure as hell didn't vote McCrory in.
Sadly, the cancellation of the concert won't affect the bigots who did vote him in.

(61,599 posts)I read today that another company cancelled plans to open a site in North Carolina. This one was going to be in Asheville, with 500 jobs. They were in the final stages of deciding and announced today that NC is no longer an option for them due to HB2.
And our gubnor is staying home "sick" this weekend - cancelled his public events. I'd say the shit's hitting the fan.

(31,384 posts)I'm 'friends' on fb with a woman who is a sister of a friend of mine who lives in NJ.
They are both Republicans... and the one who lives in Kernersville--between Winston/Salem
and Greensboro--had tickets for the concert. She's a HUGE Springsteen fan. And she is pissed.
I'm really tempted to make a comment on her fb page about how actions have consequences.
But it won't change her mind.
I think it might be time to unfriend both of them.
BTW, both my sons are gay...and one is a graduate of UNC - Chapel Hill. He is no longer
a resident of NC since he's in grad school at Yale--but the other one lives in Cary.

(534 posts)Homophobia still causes gays in many places to seek out sexual interaction in public restrooms. So now there is a law to punish us LGBT people, for a situation that was created by ignorance and homophobia. A situation where, were they simply free to love who they chose, they would not be inclined to resort to fast, secret gratification in non-romantic environments.

(413 posts)if he felt he had to do it. But damnit these things tend to punish the wrong people. When Liz Phair cancelled a show here in the wake of the "Show your Papers" law, I was fairly upset. Never seen her and may not get another chance. Again, not going to dislike her for that, but I think it is misguided.
The jobs people, like Hollywood or Paypal trying to make a statement, I get, they don't want to deal with trying to enforce unfair practices on their potential employees. Recreation type boycotts though... the people that do it are generally disproportionately affecting the people they least need to convince. At least make it a "no new shows" rather than cancellations. Heck, the Boss could have used 5 minutes of his stage time to make a speech, it would have done more good.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)They most likely are not supporters of this legislation. They should not be punished. For many, I am sure this was a major event that they were greatly looking forward to. Why not just have the concert and donate all of the proceeds to fight this legislation and support LGBT citizens?

(7,892 posts)and MSM indifference. The former has enabled recruiting extremely RW conservative republican candidates who will do whatever the Koch machine tells them to do into the state legislature and Governor's mansion. The later enables a false equivalency that the extremists represent the majority of their own party and the majority in the state. In NC more Democratic votes were cast than Republican but due to gerrymandered districts the effect was to maintain the RW majority. The Federal Court really need to get off their asses about this and hear the cases we've brought in due time.

Study says those who call out grammatical errors are in fact scientifically 'jerks'
Everybody knows the world's worst people are the ones who never miss an opportunity to explain the difference between who and whom. Those "friends" who are pretending to be policing spelling and grammar for the sake of posterity are probably just flexing for attention, or so it seems to everyone they're interrupting.
As a study from the University of Michigan recently found, those people aren't just annoying, they're also apparently huge jerks.
The study looked at the way both introverted and extroverted people reacted to typos within emails, and deduced that those who were less socially-inclined tended to "judge the person who makes such errors more negatively."
For the experiment, 83 subjects were asked to peruse email responses for a roommate ad. Some contained no errors, but others had been altered to include simple common errors. For example, in some, "about" might have been written "abuot," and in other instances, "their" and "there," or "you're" and "your" might have been swapped incorrectly.
After subjects had looked over the emails, they were questioned first as to whether or not they noticed the emails, and if they had responded "Yes," they were asked to expand upon their answer.
As researchers found, those were surveyed to be "less agreeable" were most bothered by the errors, while those who surveyed as having a "more agreeable" personality tended to overlook typos.
"Agreeability was the only personality trait to have a main effect on the Housemate Scale," the study read. "Participants who tested as more agreeable on the BFI tended to rate the paragraphs more positively overall than participants who tested as less agreeable."

He could have used the concert as an opportunity to tell his fans that they should take to the streets and demand change.
ForgoTheConsequence
(4,868 posts)But it's nice to see you deflecting blame from the homophobic government of North Carolina. A missed concert isn't on the same level as systematic oppression, his cancelling of the show has made national headlines, it's working.

oberliner
(58,724 posts)He decided to cancel the concert. That was his decision.
Obviously a missed concert is not on the same level as systematic oppression, and I am not deflecting blame from the homophobic government of North Carolina. I just think that it's not the fault of the people going to the concert that this horrible law was passed. Some people are unfortunate enough to find themselves living among a large homophobic population and do not really have the wherewithal to move elsewhere.
There are lots of different ways that Bruce could've drawn attention to this issue that would have made national headlines while still performing for the people who bought tickets to see him perform.

(58,724 posts)I feel like I am not communicating well in this instance. Obviously, the bus boycott was consequential and a concert being cancelled is not. This was a thread about the concert, though, and I just thought it was unfortunate that it was cancelled when people had already purchased tickets and were looking forward to the show and had nothing to do with the legislation.
trumad
(41,692 posts)Wow!
oberliner
(58,724 posts)All I was saying was that it was unfortunate that Bruce cancelled the concert. I felt bad for the people who had bought tickets and were looking forward to the show.
You brought up Rosa Parks in a somewhat oblique way that seemed to suggest a relationship between the bus boycott and the concert cancellation.
Those do not appear to me to be analogous situations, hence my confusion.
