Do Americans have more freedoms than any other country in the world?

I was just reading an article about a veteran's memorial that they're working on here in my city and read this quote...

Americans have more freedoms and rights than any other country in the world.

Do you think this is true?

It would take a profound ignorance of the outside world not to realize that there are plenty of other first-world countries with similar rights and freedoms to ours. When you consider the additional social protections some of these countries provide, one could make an excellent case that their citizens are freer than ours.

Unfortunate citizens of places like North Korea and Belarus may have more police spies and informants per capita, but they don't have a fraction of the technology that keeps us all sorted, tabulated, and our every move predicted.

I was explaining a situation in my family to my friend from Spain. This is what I told him:
"My mom's partner's brother died (my mom is gay), and so it's been a rough couple of days at mom's house." And he asked me to repeat what I said. So I explained it again- this time in Spanish- and he said, "Oh, your mom's brother in law. In Spain, gay people just get married like straight people. So it would be the same inlaw relationships as in straight marriages."

I was dumbfounded.
