CHESHIRE >> Irvin Daubert flew in 35 combat missions in World War II from January 1943 until October 1945.

Daubert, now 95 years old, was never injured in any of those missions. Neither were any of his crewmates who flew with the Army Air Force staff sergeant in a B-24 Liberator.

But Daubert talked about such feats matter-of-factly Friday during a ceremony where he collected six medals for his service, which he had yet to receive due to a paperwork mix-up at the end of the war. The Town Hall ceremony presenting Daubert with his medals was organized by U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-5.

“We were well trained; we weren’t scared,” Daubert said, his voice clear and strong as he spoke. “We knew what to do and we did it.”

These kind of stories always remind me of my father, who became a Captain under Patton. He would have been 99 this year.

So glad that Staff Sergeant Daubert is finally getting his medals!
