explains WI keeping Walker. Not the money (see Meg Whitman), nothing in context of spending, ads or who showed up (Bill Clinton did) explains why Walker survived.
What's up in WI?

(60,006 posts)As I always use for an example - why is Bud Light (always one of the worst rated beer in tastings) by far the best selling beer in the US? Advertising works. This is the horror of the Citizens United decision. A huge monetary advantage will just about always win. Dems need to figure out a way around this issue - and FAST.

(37,573 posts)In 1992 and 1996 Wisconsin voted for Clinton, in 2000 Wisconsin voted for Gore. Yet in the same state
1990 Thompson won 58-42
1994 Thompson won 67-31
1998 Thompson won 60-39
Heck, that piece of crap would probably still be Governor of Wisconsin if Bush hadn't tapped him to be Secretary of HHS. For some reason Wisconsin, in spite of being a moderately blue state, likes its Republican Governors.
The other thing is - those are off-year elections. Meaning the President is not running that year, so voter turnout is less. The side that wins is the side that is more motivated to goto the polls, but also people get more motivated to goto the polls when they think they can win.

$25 million - $4 million. Those were the odds, our elections have little to do with anything BUT money!

(53,410 posts)I think a lot of underhanded shenanigans happened. Lots. We'll be hearing about them for a while too.
Barrett just said he won't concede until the votes are all counted. It's 8 pm in California.

(32,012 posts)I have a lot of family/friends there - folks in small towns. They are not very educated and listen to their churches. They voted for Walker because they see "family values" - they don't connect the republican party with the loss of jobs (they have been influenced to blame immigrants, welfare mothers, unions, etc. - multi-million dollar ad campaigns behind these efforts).
I saw folks in my Facebook feed this morning who were talking about voting for the first time - for Walker - and these are not folks who have any economic interest in doing so. It's frightening and I am not sure how to combat it.

(49,951 posts)It's the same things that explains his initial win. And Bush's re-election. And Jan Brewer's election. And so on.
The first things that come to my mind are Fox News, AM radio, fear, anger and moronic voters.
