Now that Cruz is DOA, can the GOP avoid Trump?

Trump is a major liability,
with scores of Republicans who will oppose him or just stay home on election day.
Does the GOP have one last card to play to avoid a Trump meltdown?

This election is .. special ..

1. How did that happen?

It was clear early that his only route to the nomination was through a brokered convention.

2. The unfolding sex scandal about Cruz

Five (5) extra marital affairs (including a call girl),
that's a bit too much when one relies on the support of evangelicals.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer holier-than-thou fake.

5. Well, if Cruz can pretend the 5 girls were a Mormon polygamous arrangement..

..Utah might buy it.

Or not

11. Don't underestimate the willingness of the religious right to overlook the sins of their own.

How many divorces has Trump had? Bush going AWOL? Reagan's divorce? Rush? They don't care when it comes to their guys. Just chalk it up to "youthful indiscretions," say Jesus made you all better, and you're back in.

13. No, sometimes the stretch can be too great

Trump? It would fit in his themes: I'm rich, I'm successful, including with women
Reagan? A divorce in Hollywood? Par for the course.

But a holier-that-thou preachy guy pandering to evangelists while having 5 affairs?
It's a bit too rich.

17. One word

Vitter.

Granted, he wasn't as holier-than-thou as Cruz, but he did survive. One advantage for Vitter though is it did happen between elections. Even for evangelicals, it takes a while to forgive.

9. Cruz said he did not know how to talk with his children about what Trump said.

How does he explain all these things to them?

Still, a number of famous ministers have cried on television to their followers and prayed to be forgiven. I will give it a few days before I check the color of Cruz toast.

15. Yeah, he says that. But I'm not buying it.

Despite the image he's trying to sell, I don't get the impression family game night is a thing at Chez Cruz.

14. Actually, it's NOT a bonus to Hillary.

My guess was (is) that Cruz and Trump are unelectable.
Some dark horse might, just might, have a (slim) chance.
Not Cruz now, and I have bet game money against Trump.

16. Yes. A Hillary nomination.

Republicans would vote for an old lawn mower if it ran against Hillary Clinton.

I wouldn't get too happy about a Trump nomination. We'd be much better off, as a party, if it had gone to the supremely unpopular Ted Cruz.
