Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThere's a petition to allow 'open carry' at the GOP convention.....and it's not from the Onion!!!!
Believe it or else: Some one has actually posted a petition on Change.org to allow open carry of firearms during the RNC convention.
RECOGNIZE OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO OPEN CARRY FIREARMS AT THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION AT THE QUICKEN LOANS ARENA IN JULY 2016
SUMMARY: In July of 2016, the GOP will host its convention at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Though Ohio is an open carry state, which allows for the open carry of guns, the hosting venuethe Quicken Loans Arenastrictly forbids the carry of firearms on their premises.
According to the policy on their website, "firearms and other weapons of any kind are strictly forbidden on the premises of Quicken Loans Arena."
This is a direct affront to the Second Amendment and puts all attendees at risk. As the National Rifle Association has made clear, "gun-free zones" such as the Quicken Loans Arena are "the worst and most dangerous of all lies." The NRA, our leading defender of gun rights, has also correctly pointed out that "gun free zones... tell every insane killer in America... (the) safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk." (March 4, 2016 and Dec. 21, 2012)
I'm not certain whether this is serious, or an attempt at satire; it's hard to tell the difference anymore!!!!! Maybe they should just change the name to the 'NRA Convention.'
I got the original link from The Bitchy Pundit's Facebook page. Her comment: "A room full of armed, slack jawed Republicans - what could go wrong?"

(3,425 posts)I can see how this plays out:
Everyone will think THEY are the GOOD GUY with the gun, and everyone else they see with a gun is the BAD GUY with the gun.
Mass carnage follows.
How many will be in attendance?
I've often wondered what it would look like if there were a mass shooting at a gun show.
Same scenario as above: Everyone thinks THEY are the GOOD GUY with the gun, and everyone else they see with a gun is the BAD GUY with the gun. Mass carnage follows.
In a scenario like that, instead of dozens (as in San Bernardino) there could be hundreds, if not thousands killed.
If that happened, will they still claim the solution is more guns?

(2,792 posts)to find out that the Quicken Loans Arena has a right to prohibit firearms. Of course, they could just take their disputes outside and have it out with each other, the protestors, and the police. For the life of me, I can't figure out why the mentally ill (e.g., Republicans) are allowed to purchase and carry guns.
I wonder if there has ever been a study on comparing party alignment and the rate of mental illness
Maybe the best we can get is to make a point, open a dialogue--and hell, who knows. You make a great point.

(581 posts)The Republicans along with the NRA are pushing gun carry into every building and property, whether private or public with the bills they pass. The huge push is into educational buildings, lower and higher education. If Republicans ever suffered a gun attack on them, they would change, but until that happens, The GOP will continue it push.
Just think, Senator Mitch McConnell had to approve of the Supreme Court nominee before Republicans would. Does this tell you how much power the NRA has over the GOP, But thus far the NRA is silent on the GOP convention. But the NRA always stays silent in the big fights.

(1,265 posts)Maybe the Quicken Loans Arena policies are cast in stone and can't be changed, but there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of Republican Party campaign events going on every day. If it is the official policy of the Republican Party to allow gun owners to freely carry their weapons into every corner of society, then they're a bunch of effin' hypocrites if they don't open as many of those venues as possible to law-abiding gun owners who want to carry there.

(22,336 posts)They're in a bind here. On one hand, if they stay gun free, they're admitting that open carry and having guns everywhere are unsafe things. On the other hand, if they allow guns, with Trump being the most popular with the people but hated by the Republican leadership, there's potential for a huge mess at that convention.
