He is one of the great locals. His daughter accompanied him on bass, and vocals. She is 19 years old. She has a 3 1/2 octave range and she never sings out of tune. She can turn a note like no other I have heard live in years. Her blues, soul, and standard jazz are exquisite. Granted, her father has helped her along. But when I suggested Gershwin, she sang "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess with such wonderful delicacy, and perfection that it brought tears to my eyes.

South side Denny and his daughter, Laurie.

Sometimes local music just sets one free.

They aren't so local these days. They live in Montreal. But home is still rural Michigan, where they have many friends.
