The date should be written 02/26/16 or better yet, 02/26/2016

5. I hate using slashes in dates - to easy to confuse with numbers

I do a lot of transcribing of old documents and when dates are all numbers and have slashes, it can be very confusing. Dashes work better, dots tend to disappear. Dots seem to have come in with computers - probably because of the use in IP addresses and because you don't have to shift to type them.

Better yet, for my genealogy I use dd mmm yyy - today would be 23 Feb 2016. Mixing numbers with letters prevents confusing days with months. Putting the lettered month in the middle separates the two sets of numbers without having to use additional punctuation.

I still have to stop and pay close attention to dates with a day from 1-12 because I have a tendency to mentally flip back when it's not clear which number is obviously the day and not the month. I am very grateful for people who use the format you do.

9. Some of the dates I have entered in my database are wrong

Since my MIL tended to flip back and forth between dd-mm-yyyy and mm-dd-yyyy in her notes and it was confusing when I was transferring everything to computers. So when the programs got sophisticated enough to allow a choice, I went to the format I now use. There is never any confusion - except for the conversion from Quaker dates to regular. Too many sources translate "first month" as January when it is actually March!

11. Dashes work too.

I fact, I normally use dashes. The dots are confusing both because I am into computers and because people using dots is showing their ignorance because the user thinks they are techie savvy and up to date or something, when they are really not.
The dots did come from the computer IP addresses.

We pretty much agree here.

12. I places in Europe the use dots in place of commas in numbers.

Using dots in the wrong places, can be confusing for many people, including me. That is what I take exception to. They have their place, like at the end of sentences and IP addresses, but not everywhere.
I am not seeing anything about using dots at your link.

15. It's towards the bottom, but it's definitely there.

Single comment. Think it says slashes, dots, and dashes are all okay. Not certain because on my phone at the mm moment and that's a pain.

Just a matter of what you are accustomed to I guess. Dots in dates and phone numbers are easier for me than slashes and dashes.

Simply pointing out that using dots is not indicative of ignorance as you suggest.

Takeoff on an old joke but I think appropriate in this case.
