Missouri high school student charged with possessing two machine guns

KANSAS CITY, MO | BY KEVIN MURPHY

A Missouri high school student has been charged with possessing two machine guns after he showed up at school dressed in military clothing and body armor while carrying a loaded pistol in his backpack, federal officials said on Thursday.

Michael T. Knoth, 19, was arrested at Tarkio High School in northwestern Missouri on Feb. 11 after another student told a teacher that Knoth showed him a loaded magazine, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Tammy Dickinson in Kansas City. The school was placed on lockdown.

The teacher alerted Tarkio police, who searched Knoth's backpack and found a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol, six loaded 9mm pistol magazines, three loaded .223- or .556-caliber magazines, a spring-assisted knife, a seat belt cutter and a window punch, federal officials said.

Police also found two loaded 9mm magazines and 15 loaded .223/.556-caliber magazines in his car parked outside the school.

Later, police searched a bedroom in Knoth's home, where they discovered two different machine guns, one of which was loaded; ammunition and loaded magazines, federal officials said. The loaded gun had no visible serial numbers or manufacturer's stamp, officials said.

We have to charge the irresponsible sellers or suppliers.

A bedroom in his home? Parents should be held responsible.

"Investigators also searched Knoth’s home. During a search of the southwest bedroom, investigators found a loaded machine gun in the closet, an AR-style .223/.556 pistol, containing no visible serial numbers or manufacturer stamp. They found a second machine gun, an UZI-style 9mm firearm (unknown manufacture), in the dresser. Investigators found a receipt from M&A Parts, Inc., which listed various firearm parts, including an M16 LPK part kit with auto sear. (An auto sear is a device used to turn a semi-automatic rifle into a fully automatic rifle.) Investigators also found numerous rounds of ammunition and numerous loaded .223/.556 and 9mm magazines throughout the residence."

Or did he have a mishmash of parts which, with the proper knowledge, could have theoretically been used to assemble an actual, functioning machine gun?

Just curious. It's really a moot point. The law doesn't care one way or the other.

"Special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms field tested the AR-style and UZI-style firearms, both of which displayed traits of a machine gun according to the affidavit."

"According to a signed affidavit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, a search of Knoth's Tarkio residence turned up a loaded AR-style .223/.556 pistol, an UZI-style 9mm rifle and a kit used to turn a semi-automatic firearm into a fully modified weapon. The ATF said modification of the hole and pin above the selector switch in the AR-type firearm is associated with machine gun modification. The ATF said both weapons were field tested and "displayed traits of a machine gun," according to the affidavit."

Those parts do NOT turn an AR into a machinegun
The autosear will not fit without machine work
Cops, FBI and ATF love to trumpet those statements and charges but the charges are always dropped

But the kid needs to be in jail on the primary charges
Wonder what his mental health dx is?
