Is Trump recasting Republican principles, or is he revealing how little GOP voters really cared about principles in the first place?
Trump--the candidate for people who don't, or can't, think too much.

Now there can be just the One True Faith.
Every time a church or denomination says that X group is failing at living up to Christ's teaching, they basically say that group is not Christian. DUers do it all the time.
I personally don't consider the pope--or Trump, or most DUers--to be Xian. IMHO, most Xians and their descendants, biological and religious, turned their back on Jesus by 150 and finished up their theological middle finger to God by 300 AD. Since then they've been arguing mostly about whether their sacred hot-dog hats should be blue or red, while others came along a few hundred years later and said their color would be green. But both miss the point that it wasn't going to be a celestial hot-dog stand at all but they're all so blinded by the need to be shown correct and by the lines dividing them that they argue blissfully on.
In this case, though, a lot of people laugh at the Pope's pronouncements except when the Pope's on their side. Which, again, misses the point.

but some humans are worth emulating
other than that, much of religion is just too human-based for my tastes

(14,691 posts)A lot of fundies don't consider RC to be Christians. They call it "The Whore of Babylon."
The Jehovah Witnesses are so sure they're the right kind of Christian that, they refer to themselves as "living in the truth" and don't deign to lower themselves to participate in interfaith events.
I left the RC religion (for numerous reasons) when I was still in Catholic high school and never looked back.
I have no gripes with Jesus - it's a lot of his followers I don't want to be associated with.
