Texas 'affluenza' teen to be transferred to adult jail: law enforcement

FORT WORTH, TEXAS

The Texas teenager who was derided for an "affluenza" defense for killing four people while driving drunk is set to be transferred to an adult jail on Friday from the juvenile detention center where he has been held, law enforcement sources said.

Ethan Couch, 18, has been held at the juvenile detention center in Fort Worth, Texas, since he was deported from Mexico at the end of January.

Texas 'affluenza' teen transferred to adult jail, held without bail

FORT WORTH, TEXAS | BY MARICE RICHTER

The Texas teenager who was derided for an "affluenza" defense for killing four people while driving drunk was transferred to an adult jail on Friday from the juvenile center where he has been held since he was deported from Mexico in late January.

Ethan Couch, 18, was in custody in a single cell, for his own protection, at an adult jail in Tarrant County, Sheriff Dee Anderson said.

His case is still under the jurisdiction of the juvenile system, which means he is not currently eligible for bond, Anderson told reporters.

"He is getting ready to be 19 years old. He is an adult. He doesn't need to be housed in a juvenile facility, in my opinion," Anderson said.

A hearing planned for Feb. 19 will determine if his case will move to the adult system, Anderson said. If that happens, Couch could be eligible for release on bond, legal sources have said.

subjected to what he would be in a general population of adults...he really is a kid..I would rather see his parents be held accountable.

He's 18 and when minority kids as young as 15 are routinely tried as adults, I have no sympathy for this affluent white murderer who, for the most part, got away with it.

To raise a child who believes he is immune to the laws and punishments of this country is ABUSE!

Piss on him and his mom. I have no sympathy what so ever. They both earned every minute of punishment. I had a niece killed by a filthy rich kid whose granddad was a prominent attorney. He also got off actually with a reward of $33,000 settlement. Fuck em.

He's a grown man who can vote and join the Army.

It isn't a complicated concept that we asked him to understand.

No one in that situation would have been charged with first degree murder. And in the same factual situation no court would convict on that charge.

I have absolutely no sympathy for him. He killed 4 people because of his deliberate choices. He belongs in jail and not just for a weekend visit, but for many years to come.
