Monsanto's GMO Corn Linked To Organ Failure, Study Reveals

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/12/monsantos-gmo-corn-linked_n_420365.html

In a study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences, analyzing the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers found that agricultural giant Monsanto's GM corn is linked to organ damage in rats.

According to the study, which was summarized by Rady Ananda at Food Freedom, "Three varieties of Monsanto's GM corn - Mon 863, insecticide-producing Mon 810, and Roundup® herbicide-absorbing NK 603 - were approved for consumption by US, European and several other national food safety authorities."

"Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal, spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted. As there normally exists sex differences in liver and kidney metabolism, the highly statistically significant disturbances in the function of these organs, seen between male and female rats, cannot be dismissed as biologically insignificant as has been proposed by others. We therefore conclude that our data strongly suggests that these GM maize varieties induce a state of hepatorenal toxicity....These substances have never before been an integral part of the human or animal diet and therefore their health consequences for those who consume them, especially over long time periods are currently unknown."

1. How nice that our corporate friendly government doesn't require food manufacturers to label GMOs.

17. It is not so difficult to avoid

as we don't eat processed food. I cook most of what we eat from scratch and have done for years. I read labels before I buy prepared and if it has soy, corn including hi fructose sweeteners, or unidentifiable lists of unappetizing chemicals then it goes back on the shelf.

18. It's not in a surprising huge number of things called..

.. food.

Not to be snarky, but it is really pretty easy to avoid as long as you are not eating a diet found solely in bags, boxes or windows.

28. I also avoid it like the plague. You have to avoid processed foods and avoid "corn syrup".

And eat organic bread. I may have eaten it in popcorn, though. I dunno if that's GMO.

I'm sure I've eaten it over the past several years but not as much as I would have if I didn't make the effort to avoid it.

8. Apparently most of the soybeans in the US are GMO also. And soy is mixed into a lot of our foods.

And unfortunately, GMO crops are mixing in with natural ones all over the world.

I still wish we could get a GMO labeling law passed here though. That would certainly help our organic farmers.

4. Stop shoving occult mutant crap food down America's gullet

Label the crap as genetically mutant -- that way those who want the stuff can find it, and those who don't can avoid it.

The GMO occult strategery (R) is a fundamental violation of human will.

19. I always use this example when I want to point out the idiocy of the

"invisible hand of the market"eers.

I point out to them that that is why they support labeling laws. The only way the market can react is with information for consumers that is truthful.

Adam Smith said the freemarket only worked when the consumer has all the information (seriously, it is a central point in his writings). So if the free marketers are against that, then they must hate capitalism, right?

Works every time.

Small Mexican farmers' (the ones still in business after NAFTA) crops are surrounded by Big Ag and sprayed with RoundUp and their whole communities poisoned. Not to mention, the State Department is out hawking this crap all over the planet.

Why Is the State Department Using Our Money to Pimp for Monsanto?

10. No brainer. You eat poison, you get sick.

The only good think about the old-style factory-farm food is you could wash most of the chemicals off. Not so when the chemicals are grown inside the food.

Now instead of my long-winded, meandering explanation as to why all this stuff is crap, how it's different from the stuff we were eating growing up (I ate all that and I'm fine...), this is what I'm going to say.

14. The sad part is...

...the USA still has a long way to go truly appreciate the damage that can be done when you produce things only for the profit.

Now, on the outside chance that your entire country will be converted to Mormonism, 'profit-taking', known until now as the darker side of commerce, will become a ticket to salvation, as church tenets promise. And then....

...the ritual of profit-taking will become so absurd as to make itself irrelevant. There will be a great awakening.....

16. My guess is that there is a universal law that applies to all advanced civilizations in the Universe

Any civilization that acquires the means of destroying itself will, eventually, destroy itself.

That single law would explain the Fermi Paradox. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox )

21. But how can this be? Scientists told us it was safe

Perhaps not all science is based on science...but on the worship of a god called money.

Maybe people are not anti-science when they question things, perhaps they understand that all science is not pure but has a built in bias at times.

25. Scientific knowledge continually evolves as new scientific evidence comes into the mix.

I don't believe there is anything wrong with questioning science as science; continually questions itself, however that questioning should be based or grounded on some form of logic that can be questioned as well.

I believe in the case of global warming climate change, the evidence is overwhelming and longstanding.
