FBI takes lead on investigating armed takeover of federal building in Oregon/WP

Hmmm? Obama said it was a local law enforcement problem. Now, the FBI is taking over?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/01/04/fbi-takes-lead-on-investigating-armed-takeover-of-federal-building-in-oregon/

The FBI has taken charge of the law enforcement response to an armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon, saying that it will work with local and state authorities to seek “a peaceful resolution to the situation.”

“Due to safety considerations for both those inside the refuge as well as the law enforcement officers involved, we will not be releasing any specifics with regards to the law enforcement response,” the FBI said in a statement.

Federal authorities are working with the Harney County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon State Police and other local and state agencies in response to the situation in eastern Oregon, the latest chapter in an ongoing fight over federal land use in the West.

The occupation of a remote federal wildlife refuge followed a peaceful march and rally held over the weekend to support two local ranchers convicted of arson. The two ranchers — Dwight Hammond and his son, Steven — say they plan to report to federal prison on Monday.

totally covers the western states. Can anyone stir me to a good site telling me how we (the government) came to own so much of that land? The history?

of their demands, so he hopes they enjoy camping in the desert for a year or two and eventually walk away with nothing.

My guess is they would camp out for a couple of months and then quietly try to leave having accomplished nothing. Hopefully they will then arrest them one by one but I doubt if they even do that.

Press, police, etc all go home and get warm and let the morans sit around in the freezing cold for a day or two.
They will get bored and leave, and can be arrested a couple of days later if needs be.

is this how law enforcement agencies generally handle armed occupation of federal property? through rigorous investigation?
