What about media? Are these guys only in one of the buildings at the site or have they occupied all the buildings (as I've seen in pictures of the compound here on DU). Earlier I heard that they were 150 strong - then I heard that there are only about 15 guys there - what is it? Have any measures been taken yet to turn off utilities and freeze and starve them out? Where these guys planners and prepared? Did they take provisions in with them or was this just a spur of the moment occupation?

Why is there so little information coming out of this area?

Have there been any comments by any of the candidates running for the nomination from either party yet?

I have tried to bring attention to the police violence problem to many people, and you may call it lip service, as all I have done is talked and argued and tried to educate people in my day to day life. I have never heard of the "two resolution approach", and I am absolutely opposed to any such thing. I am also opposed to killing people unnecessarily, whether black or white. These white people should serve jail time for all the laws they broke. Until they shoot at someone, they should not be sentenced to death.

I doubt we will see eye to eye on this but I hope you can respect that

Just at the base of the fire tower near the headquarters. Sarah Sidner said there are no authorities, local, state or federal on site. Just "us" meaning reporters.

I bet the reporters won't stay long. It's too far from anywhere for them to enjoy hanging out there and it is cold - high of 28 F today according to one report. So long as nothing happens, the reporters will want to get the hell out of there and to somewhere warm or at least somewhere with decent hotels and restaurants.

23. The most recent report I've seen on the numbers at the refuge HQ was c. 60.

I suspect federal and state-level law enforcement are trickling in. Road conditions are really bad in the region right now (snow and freezing rain all over), so transportation will be slow. The Burns municipal airport may or may not be open...it will be hard to keep the runways clear of ice.

The perimeter that law enforcement sets up is going to have to be pretty far out, since the countryside around the compound is very open (in other words, the militants have open fields of fire). They definitely weren't just winging it, either: there are trailers full of supplies and they have generators. This was a well-planned operation, for all that the motivation behind it is idiotic. I expect them to be cut off from the grid at some point, just so that they have to start burning the fuel for those generators. Cutting off their water would be almost impossible. There will be a well (I've never seen one in my multiple visits, but I had no reason to look for one), and there's a big holding pond right next to the facility...and a spring about 1500 feet away.

There are more reporters on site now (just getting there would have likely taken all day yesterday, given the conditions). There has been an Oregonian newspaper reporter there the whole time: he lives in Burns, about 30 miles away by road. He's the guy who took most of the pics that have been published in the coverage so far.
