A POWERFUL diary from a Daily Kos Vet:

I had to put on my new bullshit waders before opening Facebook this morning, and good thing! The crap that came spewing out at me about what happened 45 minutes from my doorstep in San Bernadino was just a river of fear, innuendo, and just outright misconception. And then there is the outright lies they actually believe because Fox Spews, the NRA, and other pundits have repeated them so many times they have been sucked down in the manure and luxuriate in it! I am a Nam vet, two tours, I own a dirty Harry style magnum Smith and Wesson, I own a coach side by side 12 gauge, I own a long rifle, a target pistol, and so forth. No one, I repeat, no one wants any of them and they were all registered and purchased legally. I do not need an assault rifle added to my arsenal to protect myself, or thirty rounds jammed in my weapon. I can fill out a comprehensive background check, all they will find is a former Sgt. U.S.M.C., with a final secret clearance under his belt, no wants, no warrants, not even a traffic ticket. I am not living in fear that my government is secretly at war with me and that I am going to have to fight them off at any moment. I really am not under any misguided misconception that my guns will do me any good if my government did come after me. It would be like bringing a damn slingshot to a guided missile dual. Get over it, and the next time you want to call me names, show up on my doorstep to do it, I will show you what a pissed of rainbow liberal looks like just before the pain begins to register! Oh, and one last thing, all this misplaced rhetoric about your President, your distrust of government, your guns, and your readiness to wage war is exactly what ISIS and others want, so way to support terrorism guys!

(39,909 posts)a classic.
Be careful. You can put your eye out.
I've got one too....finally....the official Red Ryder.
My wife gave it to me on my 60th birthday,
but was apprehensive that I'm not be mature enough to handle it.
She's usually right, so she doles out the BBs only one at a time.
Now waiting for the bad guys to climb over the back fence so I can save my family.

(12,882 posts)but mine's a cheapie - like me. I only bought it because we have so many stray dogs - stray NEIGHBOR'S dogs - that harass our chickens. I pop 'em in the can and now most of them don't bother the coops anymore.
Had a .22 rifle years ago. Needed money worse than I needed it. Had an M-16 in Nam, but only ever shot it on the qualifying range.
If it gets to the "bad guys" coming after us here in the countryside, I only ask that they dispatch me with the first round fired.

(39,909 posts)All joking aside, the BB gun stays next to the door for the purpose of chasing off dogs.
I also have a wrist rocket sling shot that shoots cat eye marbles that sting dogs harder than the BB gun,
but it is very hard to run and load a sling shot at the same time.
We lived here for 7 years without losing a bird...until last year.
A HUGE Red Bone Hound (neighbors) managed to climb on a wood pile and knock out a window to the chicken yard.
I can't believe we didn't hear it. Once he got in the yard, this dog went on a blood rampage and killed every single chicken (11 hens & a rooster).
Anyone who ever says animals "only kill to eat" are full of shit. This dog had a great time tearing up all our beautiful birds.
I saw him killing our last chicken in the yard, and was so angry that instead of the BB Gun, I went for the 12 ga pump.
It was loaded with Buckshot, and I didn't want to use that , so I spent the time to jack out the buck shot, and load with 7-1/2 skeet, hoping to shoot this dog in the ass but not hurt it too much, but I wasted too much time, and she was gone.
I've chased this one off a number of times, and she keeps coming back.
We will get new chicks in March, strengthen the yard, and incorporate some kind of electrical cattle fence.
I've also informed this neighbor that if his dog comes on my property again, or kills anymore of my stock,
I'll bring him his dog on the tailgate of my truck.

(12,882 posts)I have to use our Ford tractor to move it. But it's kept out dogs and fox and anything else for 4 years now. Considering what I put into it, it's probably the worlds most expensive chicken cage!

(8,333 posts)Was your neighbor sorry, and did he offer to reimburse you? I realize nothing can replace those chickens, but i wonder if he felt any sorrow. I adore dogs but they really need to be secured at all times, either in a kennel or inside the house.

(5,927 posts)I seriously doubt that any minds can be changed there; and worse yet, I suffered the great disappointments of finding out that people I knew were absolute total clueless morons. That's too much pain.

(11,443 posts)during my 2-year Army stint. I also own a few guns, but they were inherited from my father and brother-in-law. Living in the red deep south, these Facebook Fox News dingleberries are everywhere. I debunked so much of their shit they finally left me alone and eventually I closed that waste of time Facebook account.
What's shocking is the insane bullshit and conspiracy theories they fall for time after time. It's as if they are relatives of the Nazi Brownshirts from the 1930s. They talk like zombies quoting the exact talking points of Fox News and Limbaugh over and over.

(34,165 posts)What a warrior for peace!
He is free to have the guns he owns and not other guns as he wishes. But he is incorrect that people don't want to take away some of his precious firearms. Just today I saw someone on DU make an impassioned please to ban pistols and many DUers agreed.
Well, I'm glad he expressed his opinion about not being able to fight should their be a tyrannical US gov't, but I'm surprised that a Vietnam Vet wouldn't acknowledge that a woefully under-armed populace could kick the ass of well-trained US soldiers with superior arms, missiles, and bombs.

(702 posts)Yeah I'm an army brat....Never had any guns and don't want any.
More importantly....never had a facebook account...never will either.
I can't see an upside to owning anything of the sort.

(1,309 posts)This guy is afflicted with a desire to be a lot of macho. This is a common affliction among many veterans who deep down know their efforts in Vietnam were at least wasted and at most murderous. What did he really do in the Marines? There were 25 guys in support for every one of us guys in combat. But whether he actually fought or not is not the major point. His inability to address the reality of gun violence on our nation is serious and I hope he can get the psychological counseling he needs to get rid of the anger, whether that anger came from PTSD or not. Some of mine did, and I try to cope with it .

(7,964 posts)and get the hell off Facebook. I don't know how/why anyone uses that "service" who's only goal is to harvest every last bit of data they can about you.
