PITTSBURGH (AP) — A western Pennsylvania man with white supremacist ties has been sentenced to 7½ years in federal prison for possessing 20 homemade bombs and related materials ...
He pleaded guilty in August to possessing an unregistered destructive device.
Smith's public defender argued for a lesser sentence, arguing there was no evidence Smith planned to use the bombs and saying Smith's crimes grew out of a horrific childhood. Among other things, Smith's birth father shot himself when Smith was 8, Smith fathered a child at age 14 with a 21-year-old woman, then had two other father figures die by the time he was 20.
But prosecutors noted the supremacist literature and one bomb marked with words calling President Obama a "Muslim pig" ...
