Paul Ryan Pushes Mental Health Reform Instead Of Gun Laws After Colorado Shooting
WASHINGTON -- The priority of Congress after the deadly shooting at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado over Thanksgiving weekend should be to fix the nations mental health system, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) argued Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after meeting with his members, Ryan offered his condolences to the families of the three people killed and nine injured in Colorado Springs on Friday, when a shooter opened fire inside the women's health clinic.
What happened is appalling, and justice should be swift, Ryan said. Clearly we can do more.
As far as what more Congress could do, Ryan was not definitive, but he did not call for looking at some of the more popular measures proposed in Congress, such as beefing up background checks.
He said the common denominator in all the nations frequent mass shootings is mental illness.

(36,063 posts)Yes, nothing will be done to really address the problem of preventing radicalized shooters, either through gun/ammo sale or FCC limiting violence inciting speech.
But, no, they'll do more than jacksh*t. especially when it comes to creating more prejudice and discrimination against the mentally ill.

(11,489 posts)Fixing the mental health care system would cost billions annually and the money would have to come from somewhere. I'd suggest higher taxes on guns and ammo, but he'll probably suggest taxing unions or abortions.

(15,888 posts)I'm sure that he'll try and say that Clinton broke the mental healthcare system somehow.
Still, we should call him on it. Show him what that new House Leadership position entails. Especially when he starts talking about what the Republicans broke. He's talking like he's still running for VP.

People always construct problems so that the problem is outside the interests of the group to which said people belong.

(1,941 posts)I do not agree that mental illness is the culprit in even the majority of violent crimes. The mentally ill are more likely to be the victims of violent crime than the perpetrator.

(36,063 posts)Is there even any way to honestly know that before federal actions institutionalize more fear of the mentally illness.
