Are open carry protesters fueling fear outside a Texas mosque?
The arrest of 14-yar-old Ahmed Mohamed for bringing a handmade clock to school brought attention to Irving, Texas, but tensions between the Muslim community and Texans who fear 'Islamization' had simmered for months.
Gun-toting anti-Muslim activists held a protest outside the Islamic Center of Irving, Texas, on Saturday, raising tensions in the former town of "clock kid" Ahmed Mohamed, where rifts between a Sharia-fearing public and a growing Muslim community have been highlighted by Mayor Beth Van Duyne's calls to ban the mosque's mediation panels.
Police were on hand in the Center's parking lot, with SWAT teams on standby, to allay worshippers' fears as roughly a dozen armed activists, some in face masks, lined the sidewalk. One carried a sign reading "Stop the Islamization of America."
Organizer David Wright, who cited the Paris attacks and rumors of Syrian refugees coming to Texas as reasons for the protest, said he had brought his 12-gauge shotgun because "We do want to show force," according to the Dallas Morning News. "It would be ridiculous to protest Islam without defending ourselves," he said.
Imagine if a group of armed Muslims were protesting outside a Christian church in the U.S.A.

(28,903 posts)Those with legitimate personal protection concerns can conceal-carry a handgun. Those who feel compelled to open-carry in public are exhibiting an entirely different mindset---a very unhealthy mindset, at that. Get a pro-gun activist alone for a beer and some serious conversation, and even they will admit that the open-carriers represent the bottom-feeders of their movement, a real PR problem for their cause. Steer clear of the open-carriers; it's not going to end well.

(28,903 posts)Anybody who cares to dispute either of those claims: take a look at the photos of the armed-to-the-teeth white guys who turned up at that Texas mosque, the other day. Compare and contrast that with one more look at what's left of that black kid in Chicago with a 3" pocket knife, after absorbing 16 bullets from a cop's pistol.
And spare me yet another look at that lone group of black open-carriers, alright? They are the exception that proves the rule....

(10,164 posts)And yes, that opinion is from a gun owner, legal concealed handgun carrier, and 2nd Amendment rights supporter. I find them to be a grossly counterproductive embarrassment. Open carry protesters are the PETA of the 2nd Am rights movement, it's Critical Mass. They're the kings and queens of unintended consequences, doing more harm to their cause than the most extreme of anti-gun advocates.
Besides, open carry is possibly the worst tactical choice for someone carrying for self-defense: it sacrifices any possible element of surprise and paints big ol' concentric circles on their chest for anyone contemplating shenanigans. They'll select the open carrier for their first shots, almost certainly from out of nowhere.

You are carrying a gun in the open, and may be wearing a mask?? I do not what the f*** you are up to, but my impressions would be nothing good.
Things can go from ""good guy" with a gun trying to make a point" to "actually a murdering scumbag" way too quick.
