TSA confiscates 5 year olds toys.

Is the TSA out of control? Wait until you see the toy that was confiscated.

1. TSA lies, too....

TSA spokesman Mike England confirmed to Yahoo Parenting in a statement that the toy gun was confiscated, but insists that the Zilkas had options other than letting it be trashed. “When passengers are informed that an item is prohibited from being carried into the cabin of an airplane, they are given options by TSA,” writes England. “One of those options is that passengers may place the item in a checked bag. Other options…include handing off the item to a non-traveling companion, returning it to their car, and mailing it to their destination if that airport has a mailing center. Those options …were explained [but] the passenger chose instead to voluntarily surrender the item to TSA, where it was placed in a locked bin along with other prohibited items and will ultimately be turned over to the state.”

Who has a "non-traveling companion" in the TSA sterile area? You have to show your ticket to get into the part of the airport where you line up to go through security...you won't HAVE a "non-traveling companion" with you at that point.

What they need is a frigging POST OFFICE inside the "sterile area" so people can mail their stuff to themselves. That way, the very same items will travel in the bellies of OTHER planes full of people, and that will make us all VERY SAFE indeed.

for the irony-impaired.

2. TSA could get some good press (and do the right thing) if they'd just buy

this kid a replacement and send it to him. (Bonus points if they convince the local fire department to deliver it in a ladder-truck! )

Because unless there's some specific prohibition against brightly-colored plastic toys that look nothing like guns, they screwed up...
