Surgeons needed six metal plates and 17 screws to repair the damage to an Omaha police officer’s face after he was punched and knocked out while responding to a disturbance, another officer testified Friday.

Officer Matt McDonald said he was one of the first to respond to Officer Tom Arrance’s radio call for help Oct. 7 at the BP gas station near 30th Street and Martin Avenue.

When McDonald came upon Arrance, his face was covered in blood and he was drifting in and out of consciousness. Arrance identified Chaz Hill, 31, as the person who attacked him, McDonald testified.

Hill, who was known to officers — including a gang unit officer — was later arrested and charged with felony assault on an officer, attempted robbery and resisting arrest. A Douglas County judge on Friday ruled that there was sufficient evidence to send the case to trial in district court.
