Suffolk man says he won’t return Confederate plates (VA)

By Tracy Agnew

... “I haven’t turned in my plates. I don’t plan on turning in my plates. I’ll go to jail before I turn them in” ...

“While DMV hopes plates will be returned for recycling, the agency’s primary concern is making sure inactive plates are not on the road”... It is a class 2 misdemeanor to operate a vehicle with inactive plates ...

“I was born 150 years too late,” he said. “I can’t fight for the flag, but I can stand for the principle. At least I can do that in modern times” ...

“I heard that they can seize my plates off my vehicle, but it’s going to be awful ugly if they do,” he said. “I’m willing to go down fighting.”

I believe in most states, the plate is property of the government. You let it go when they ask. CurtEastPoint Oct 2015 #1
That may be technically true Cassiopeia Oct 2015 #2
IL makes no bones about who owns the plate-- they do. n/t ColesCountyDem Oct 2015 #6

However I know when I moved away from VA (last year) I was not required to turn my plates in. All I had to do was contact the DMV to tell them I was no longer using them. The DMV said I could return them or cut them in half and dispose of them.

If he wants to fight for the flag of an avowed enemy of the United States, I hear North Korea is accepting defectors...

because if his plates are expired long enough, the DMV will just cancel his plate and re-issue a new generic one for his renewal...

Don't ask me how I know this
