Ben Carson’s Historical Ignorance: Pledge Of Allegiance Is Proof Of America’s Christian Roots

All of this nonsense took place at– of course– a megachurch in Georgia by the name of Free Chapel, where Carson promised the faithful that if he makes it into the Oval Office, God will take over America, everyone else be damned.

He then goes on to use the fact that “In God We Trust” is on our money and that the nationalist indoctrination that is the Pledge of Allegiance has the words “under God” in its message to “prove” that America is a Christian nation, and that nothing can change that.

Well, I’ve got news for you, Dr. Carson. “In God We Trust” was first added to coins in the U.S. in 1864– nearly a century after America defeated Great Britain to become its own nation. It did not grace paper currency until 1957. Further, it did not replace E Pluribus Unum (“out of many, one”) as the national motto until 1956 during the Cold war, which took place roughly 60 years ago. Also, “Under God” was not added to the Pledge of Allegiance until 1954.

In other words, no, America’s founding documents said not one word about Christianity or religion at all, except for the Establishment Clause, which reads:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

of stupid, crazy, and violent things Dr. Ben Carson has said. The off topic section of a video game forum I check out sometimes has a pretty good running thread so people can keep up with the latest Ben Carson crazy man news. I don't the topic curator will be able to keep up though. Seems like a full time job to me :-P

"...under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in the '50s. Most people have totally bought into the Christian nation bullshit & the media keeps it alive cuz conflict = ratings = advertisers = profit.

it is astonishing that there is anyone in America who doesn't know about it and realize the US cannot be any type of religion's nation.

display on DU. You might be able to find that same image somewhere else and edit your post. In fact, here's one that works. You could copy its URL and paste it into your OP with an edit:

Or not. You can just leave that embarrassing failed hotlink for everyone to see. Up to you.

back in the Dark Ages when I learned it, and I say it the way I learned it to this day - if it have to say it at all, because I think pledging allegiance to a piece of cloth is pretty stupid.

I find it truly frightening that somebody as monumentally stupid as Ben Carson could have ever made it through any medical school.
