WASHINGTON — Marco Rubio’s U.S. Senate campaign in 2010 started out as a lost cause, an underfunded intraparty insurgency against a popular governor who enjoyed the full backing of the Republican establishment.

Everyone said Rubio had no chance against Charlie Crist. But the young Miami politician tapped into the growing anti-establishment sentiment and, as the primary approached, Crist decided to jump ship to run as an independent.

Rubio rolled to victory in the ensuing three-way race for Senate. Crist went on to become a Democrat.

Now Rubio, 44, is after the highest office in the land. He’s competing in a crowded GOP primary field, but his Iowa campaign chairman said Rubio is up to the challenge.
