(9,999 posts)This guy is talking faster than a shady used car salesman trying to sell a Yugo flood car (no offense to honest car salesman - which I know there are). All that was missing was the sweat pouring from his brow and upper lip.

(263 posts)I have been away from conputers all of yesterday and most of today. I've often come to this site to get a handle on the day's news but I am completely confused as to who this Cory Booker is and what is going on.

(13,062 posts)He proceeded to shank Obama in the back by defending Bain capital and chastising the President for criticizing Romney.
As it turns out, Booker got a lot of his early campaign money from Bain capital and other financial equity firms, so he looks like a cynical, slimy backstabber.

(45,319 posts)Many Americans do not know who he is, and many more are not overly impressed with his job position. I know he's Rachel's pal and she puts him on TV and I know that in his own region he is well known. I know who he is, I follow politics and I have ties to Newark and NJ in general. Most people I know do not know who he is, and once told they say 'and why is his opinion important? He's mayor of a medium sized city.'
Most Americans do not know who Corey Booker is. This should be good news to those of us who did not care for his message this weekend. He does not have the standing in society that many here seem to think he has. Cities with more people than Newark follow. Can you tell me who is Mayor of these towns? Fresno, CA. Colorado Springs, Wichita KS, Mesa AZ, Arlington TX. All far lager than Newark. Who is the mayor in each, no asking anyone. Now tell me why the mayor of Mesa AZ should get the ear of the nation.

(57,936 posts)I'm a regular visitor to DU and when the discussion about Cory Booker started yesterday, I had to Google his name to find out who he is. I consider myself very well informed, but I had never heard of Cory Booker.
Welcome to DU. I hope you won't get discouraged. All kinds of people visit DU and post here -- some nice, some unkind. It's a mix like everywhere else.

(2,307 posts)AND I have been on DU and I didn't have a clue who Cory Brooker was. So laugh away. I guess it is better to keep silent than to ask questions, less asking the question will be answered with ridicule. Ignorance breeds ignorance.

(12,008 posts)I haven't spent any time away from a computer in months. Why the hell should I know who this guy is, and why should I care? I've seen a number of posts about this guy today on DU, and a cursory look at them has given me no further insight, so I've just moved on.

lookingfortruth
(263 posts)lot of information but it is not a friendly place to be.
I think dealing with the small minded REPUG birthers in my town would give me more kindness than the time I have spent on this site.
I will not be returning and if you can get a message to the person or persons that run this place: THEY need to have way for new people to make view points or complaints known.
Thank you NYC_SKP for your kindness. It will not be forgotten.

If you haven't left for good already, just click on their name and then click "ignore". Do that enough times and you'll be much happier here.

(20,453 posts)I sometimes get snarky myself, but it's usually in defense of some dumb ass comment, like the one upthread to your post. Truth is, I didn't know this dude until today.

(9,999 posts)Let me apologize for any rudeness you experienced. In fact, I just got the details on this story myself about 1 hour ago. Thank you for caring enough about being informed to ask.
So, as MrMickeysMom said above: Please stick around - we are glad to have you and there are many wonderful people here to drown out the few who would do well to learn some manners.

(9,791 posts)It's tough to be the new kid around here sometimes. I've been here since we were all newbs but the atmosphere has changed because disruptors show up now and then. Shake it off and stick around. Most of us aren't snarky jerks.
Don't let a few snarkasauruses scare you off. We've all been victims of their negativity from time to time.

(13,776 posts)I think people are (often quite rightly--but, obviously, not always rightly) suspicious of new people because it's so common for DU to get trolls from RW sites who register and then fling their poo all over the place until they're kicked off. Of course, you didn't do anything of the sort, so I have absolutely no idea why you got a frosty reception, but please don't think that you aren't welcome. You're one of the good ones.

(20,572 posts)there are a few jerks here but truthfully - most people are polite and informative. If someone replies having broken the rules you can alert on them. (Looks like some have broken the rules in their reply to you)
If they haven't actually broken the rules just try to ignore them. You can also block people who are problematic for you.
Some of the problems are common to the internet - anonymity gives some people "courage" to let their worst selves shine through.

(9,298 posts)Or come back if you've already left. I believe your username at least partially defines where you are coming from. The only reason I know about Cory Booker is because I'm a teacher and have followed his descent into the madness of all things "charter" when it comes to schools.
Stay tuned to DU - you'll learn a lot and we'll learn a lot from you.

(5,599 posts)d you want to get rid of them. I happen to think Cory made a mistake and he is being crucified for it, yet he has worked hard for
the people of New Jersey and all of that is ignored.
I will take my cue from the people that live next to him, from the people he has personally helped, and from his record, not this one dumb incident.

(17,609 posts)love to play that both sides garbage the Senator from W Virginia Joe Manchin who goes on Hannity's show and doesn't even pretend to be a Dem just uses the letter in front of his name ,the Senator Casey from Senator Baucas,Pennsylvania,Testor Montana,Claire McCaskill,Evan Bayh,Harold Ford,Adrian Fenty,Senator Conrad.
I could go on they show up on Scarborough and work against everything most Dems and a majority of the country really believe and then tell us we are just as extreme as the Teabaggers..
These are some of the people who have stopped most of the President's agenda and then the Right wing says we had a majority in 2006 and beyond and I say bullshit!
They spew out this shit for the people who haven't paid attention or who don't know what has been going on for decades.. Bluedog/republicon liars!!!

just last week there was a thread here talking about how presidential booker was, and how "hot". never mind that he's pursued a privatizing corporate agenda virtually indistinguishable from the republican platform, he's presidential. gag me.

(8,224 posts)Mr. Booker underestimated the level of hubris entailed in the act of stepping into the middle of this campaign. Many consumer oriented businesses are backing away from participation in pacs because they don't want 50 percent of their customers mad. PAC funds so far have come from the independently wealthy, in short those who can find public approval irrelevant.
This is going to be an explosive campaign that I think Obama will win, but both sides will be quite angry at any moment with even slight provocation. It has gone quite negative very early, and this will not stop until after the election. The only hope for functional government is one party control of the WH and Congress, so the battle will spread down the ticket. The answer at the polls will define things for quite some time to come.
Booker stepped face first into a buzzsaw. Appeals to comity and non-partisan equanimity, as theoretically laudable as they might be, will not be heard this time around. My disappointment in him is that he is apparently not politically bright enough to have already known this.
He should be nervous
