There is something curious going on with the American people as voters, and it is difficult to determine exactly what the problem is. Oh it is true that voters, particularly Republican voters, are inherently ignorant, even stupid, but it does not entirely explain why they consistently vote against their own best self-interests. It is also true that even when conservatives are dissatisfied with their Republican representatives and candidates performance, or lack thereof, they still show up at the ballot box and re-elect them reliably. And so it is that despite a new Pew Research poll showing that Republicans have lost significant support among the population, particularly with Republican voters, it is not necessarily a good sign for Democrats and certainly not a reason to celebrate.
In what should be an obvious poll result, the Republican Partys image has grown more negative overall during the first half of this year. Currently, only 32 percent of Americans have a favorable impression of the Republican Party, while 60 percent have an unfavorable view; that is what happens after six months of raving lunacy and anti-everything extremism borne of truly obscene presidential candidates positions. The favorable views of the GOP have tumbled eighteen percentage points since January.
Democrats continue holding steady, although not stellar, ratings with mixed results of 48 percent favorability as opposed to 47 percent unfavorable, but that is nothing new. Although, that slight Democratic favorability advantage narrowed slightly after Republican extremists prevailed in the 2014 midterms and took control of the entire Congress, the recent poll results reveal the gap in favor of Democrats is wider now than it has been in over two years.
It should surprise no-one, not even Republicans, that Democrats still hold wide advantages over the GOP on empathy and honesty, and are viewed as more concerned with the needs of people like me by 53 percent to 31 percent; they also lead Republicans on governing in an honest and ethical way (45 percent to 29 percent). However, none of this is new and despite the extremism, complete lack of ethics, dishonesty, and blatant disregard for the American people, Republicans remain a force that liberals, progressives, and rank-and-file Democrats continue to underestimate like they have since 2010. Perhaps it is because they are so desperate for good news that just learning that Democratic candidates are drawing large crowds, or favored by voters, convinces them that Republicans are finished as a political force. Nothing is farther from the truth despite the fact that most Americans believe that Democrats do serve the interests of the people; all the people.

The current survey finds that positive views of the GOP among Republicans have declined 18 percentage points since January, from 86% to 68%. Independents also view the Republican Party less favorably; 29% today, compared with 37% six months ago.
Democrats, by contrast, continue to express highly positive opinions of their party: 86% view the party favorably, little changed from 84% in January.

(47,953 posts)and terrorism. And tied on economy. One would almost think that there had been a concerted effort to hide the record of a certain president who was in office from Jan 2001 to Jan 2009.....not to mention his dad, and a certain deficit-exploding former actor.

(1,150 posts)A couple of older 'conservative' friends I have absolutely will not accept that there was no link between Iraq and 9/11. I offered to show one of them videos of Cheney and Rumsfeld first stating that there was a connection (before the war) and then videos of them saying 'I never said that was a connection,' (later) and he wouldn't let me.
In their cases it's a deep personal need for lies that they wholly fell for to be truth, so that they don't have to acknowledge that we would ever go to war purely based on BS.
My father, a staight-up knee-jerk Republican voter, told me it was impossible for the top incremental tax rates to have been 70% on all income over $107,000 before Reagan. He had actually started farming in 1974 and still didn't believe it. I showed him IRS documentation and he insisted that it was fake or something else - not income tax.
Couldn't accept it - the budget deficit was strictly about 'runaway' welfare programs, which were the fault of Democrats.

For most of the far right people I know, no document, data, confession or anything really, would ever be enough. If you never look at what the opposing viewpoint has to say, you don't run the risk of possibly having to admit that your stance was incorrect.

Americans don't really like either party. It's just the GOP is liked less. And there is no other alternative but Democrats. Most Americans feel the country is going down the wrong path and have felt that way for years. There is a general sense in the populace that the next generation will have a lower quality of life than the previous for the first time in history.

<snip>
Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus says he thinks Donald Trump is a net positive for his party.
During a TV interview on WISNs Upfront this weekend in Milwaukee, Priebus, who has previously asked Trump to tone down his remarks on immigration, now says the Trump show is a good thing for the GOP.
It brings a lot of interest in the Republican field. I think its a net positive for everybody and I think its an indicator that theres a lot of folks out there who are sick and tired of Washington and Trump has tapped into that, Priebus said. When you have 30 million people watching [the first GOP debate], not to mention the fact that we have 16 other incredible candidates out there, I think we are showing America that we are the young, diverse party, offering a whole slew of options for people and thats a good thing.
The RNC chair said he would be comfortable with Trump being the Republican nominee and does not question his loyalties to the party, despite the real estate moguls previous support for liberal positions on issues like abortion and universal health care.

(20,827 posts)the issues they bring up are either so wrapped up in code words and fantasy scandals that it touches no one. Meanwhile actual daily concerns of American citizens haven't been touched on by that party which is odd since their are 17 candidates.
