OUR comment From Independent Underground News & Talk
FIRST: Praying for POTUS Jimmy Carter.....
CANCER SUCKS and THE FOCUS SHOULD BE ON THE CURE FOR THIS HORRIBLE DISEASE and stop the "Marketing" of Cancer over an ACTUAL CURE!
P.S.: Sarcasm based, "Smart" or otherwise unnecessary comments outside of offering Prayers, Good Wishes, Thoughts on POTUS Carter or his Cancer will be removed from this thread. This is a serious battle POTUS Carter and his Family is facing and as Democrats, he should have our 150% support.

(14,400 posts)The reason there isn't a "cure" for cancer is that what works for one cancer and one person is completely useless on another person. Even the same type of cancer in different individuals respond differently to chemotherapeutics.
The newer immuno-oncology drugs tend to show better outcomes for at least a growing percentage of patients with a certain cancer because they are the first drugs that can actually target the cancer instead of targeting fast growing cells in general.
Cancer is complicated and because of that there is general belief that there won't be a magic bullet to cure it.

Prayer - aka talking to oneself and imagining that some supernatural being is not only listening, but might decide to intercede on behalf of Pres Carter due to your praying to it - is useless.

No more and no less than positive thoughts, well-wishes, hope and many other kind gestures.

(39,367 posts)That fact alone should have been enough for you to spare us your disrespect. So far, it seems to have been for many others here who share your views on prayer. Congrats to them.

(24,393 posts)In fact, studies have shown that sick people who are religious and know people are praying for them do WORSE in their recovery than do those who aren't believers in prayer.
If we really wanted to help people like Pres Carter, we'd forego the make believe that is prayer because it's actually hurting the patient.
But, no, religion gets a special carve out in this country, no matter how destructive it is. Exactly how much are you respecting Pres Carter by engaging in prayer when it's been shown to be counterproductive in healing the sick?

(39,367 posts)She and Jimmy read Scripture to each other every night, and now she is doubtless inflicting undue suffering on her husband by praying for him.
stopbush
(24,393 posts)But reading scripture to each other has no more effect than would be reading "The Night Before Xmas," outside of any edification they find on a human level in doing something together. At least that simple Xmas story isn't laced with the racism, bigotry and misogyny of the scriptures.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
I am so glad that Carter has his faith. It comforts me to know that he is facing this with such strength that his faith gives him.

(5,065 posts)and his saying that he intended to devote the rest of his life to justice for women chokes me up whenever I think about it.
Blessings to President Carter and his family--Rosalind, Amy, and others. We have been truly blessed by them.

(63,900 posts)"Let Emily sing to you, because she cannot pray." She refused the church of her day in New England but found her strength through her genius in poetry.
Here is a brief poem she wrote that was quoted in the final scene of "Sophie's Choice."
AMPLE make this bed.
Make this bed with awe;
In it wait till judgment break
Excellent and fair.
Be its mattress straight,
Be its pillow round;
Let no sunrise yellow noise
Interrupt this ground.

(7,875 posts)At worst he was ahead of his time on many things. Almost all of his 'failures' as president were the result of Republican obstructionism and sabotage, (Yes, they were doing it even then- they were just less shameless about it.) and were amplified by the two-decade right wing smear campaign that followed.
I'm not optimistic that at his age Jimmy's going to pull through, but I take comfort in the knowledge that at least he will have lived long enough to see people waking up to the truth about him and not just accepting the Republican bullshit.

(146,282 posts)Only DU juries can do that, and they can only hide them. Anyone can see what was posted. Maybe this was something in the material you posted from some other place, but I wanted to let you know that you can't do that here.

(7,006 posts)And further comments by this member would not appear in this thread. Thank you for your comment but I'm well aware on how DU works as I sit on many DU juries.
MineralMan
(146,282 posts)There is no user tool that allows that. You can Ignore a user, but that only prevents YOU from seeing their posts. You may be thinking of Facebook, which does allow you to block users from posting in a thread you started on your own timeline.
It's impossible for a DUer to block anyone from posting in any thread. You can alert on someone, and if their post is hidden, that person will not be able to post again in that thread, but that requires a jury vote.
I'm sorry to say that you are the one that does not quite understand how DU works. There's no way for you to block a poster as an individual DUer.

(7,006 posts)With such, this discussion is getting off the subject of supporting Former POTUS Carter Battle with life threatening Cancer and I refuse (as asked in the P.S. associated with this thread) to engage further with you.
MineralMan
(146,282 posts)Not as an individual user. You can only alert on a post and hope a jury has at least four votes to hide.
If you can block a poster, you're welcome to try to block this post on your own. There is no way to do that, I'm afraid. If you can do it, it will be a great surprise.

(7,365 posts)Horrible news, but President Carter will battle it through I am sure. If he loses he moves on with his held high, a man of compassion, grace, empathy...someone who was a champion for human rights and peace. A man who would build houses by driving the nails himself instead of showing up for photoops. A man who prayed in his closet and let his actions speak louder than his words. A man "more Christian" in his pinky than the current gang of maniacal charlatans posing as 'people of God'. The total antitheses of the current politicians and probably the last in a long time to get elected because they genuinely gave a shit about the world over.
Get well Mr. President.

(13,390 posts)I have noticed that more and more people are taking on this attitude of death as a natural part of life. I think it is comforting to loved ones, and healthy for the person who is approaching the end. I wish him and his family well as they move through a painful process. We are all better for the contributions he has made.
