Ohio’s Edison sculpture set to occupy Statuary Hall

By Samuel Votaw
The Columbus Dispatch • Monday August 10, 2015 8:03 AM

WASHINGTON — Former Ohio Gov. William Allen is on his way out the door of the U.S. Capitol. And Thomas Edison is on his way in.

The switch is part of Ohio’s effort to de-emphasize a Civil War-era governor who didn’t think much of President Abraham Lincoln and who thought fighting the Civil War was a bad idea.

So sometime in the fall, Allen’s statue will be removed from stately Statuary Hall just off the floor of the U.S. House , and a new statue of Edison, the inventor of the lightbulb and motion-picture camera who grew up in Ohio, will take up residence.

In doing so, Ohio officials hope to start a trend that will eventually lead to the removal of the other 10 statues of people in Statuary Hall with links to the Confederacy or who defended slavery, such as Mississippi’s Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy ...

Pardon my rant. I know that this is more about removing statues than about Edison.

Tesla was the genius of our time, having beaten Edison in the current wars.

Edison was an asshole who was good at marketing and at stealing ideas and bilking people out of their money and ideas.

In this modern age of corporatism, it seems fitting that we should pay tribute to a shyster marketer like Edison.

Maybe we can add statues of members of the Walmart clan and the Kochs next.
