U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement in support of the Iran nuclear agreement:
Im proud that America led six countries toward an historic international agreement with Iran. I believe we are right to choose a path of international diplomacy to achieve our goal of verifiably preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
I have carefully reviewed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), attended numerous classified briefings, heard from experts and constituents, and examined detailed arguments for and against the agreement. I have also been guided by the hard lessons that should be learned when America chooses to engage in military action and war in the Middle East. Simply put, I do not believe that rejecting this agreement is in our national security interest.
For that reason the choice is clear, I will support this international agreement because it will best serve Americas national security interests and it is built on verification with a robust inspections and compliance regime that will cut off all of Irans potential pathways to a nuclear weapon.

(92,136 posts)point out in the same article that the OTHER SENATOR FROM NEW YORK, Senator Gillibrand is supporting the deal.
Note:
After I posted this I noticed that the OP took out the NY Times link. I will leave my comment in though

(23,946 posts)When folks announce support it gets page 10 everywhere.
Not that it makes any difference, Obama has out manuvered everyone including the war loving media.
This peace trophy is already polished and on the mantle!
Schumer has made a grave political error...and for what I still do not understand.
Compare Baldwin's statement of factual truth to Schumer's statement that could have been written by Bibi himself...and probably wa.

(92,136 posts)would like to think so, but sincerely doubt it. The money he takes in from various PACs would probably neutralize any political fallout.

(23,946 posts)about the media being able to keep up the drama for as long as possible on behalf of their chosen party.
Even if 67 are opposed, not going to happen, Obama vetoes it and then it has to come back for a veto override vote...not going to happen, because the math and the logic in favor of the deal is disputable only if you have another, hidden agenda, like Schumer, who loves Israel more than America or his own President and party leader.

Thank you, Sen. Baldwin!

I'm not sure about the six countries or why there is opposition, so I will have to do some looking into, but Wisconsin does have great people living and working here. Thanks for the reminder.

(9,688 posts)Russia,China, Great Britain, France and Germany. . . and of course Iran itself. Impressive, given current US diplomatic tensions with at least two of these countries - three, counting Iran. Even more impressive to me in some ways (given the natural tendency of bureaucracies to turf wars)is the fact that so many federal entities - State, DOE, Treasury, the White House staff -- all worked so effectively and cordially together.
This is masterful diplomacy, carried out by a first-rate diplomatic team, and I've never been prouder of my country. Special kudos to Sec. Kerry, Sec. Moniz, and Wendy Sherman.

The only entities in the world who oppose this are Israel, hard-liner Iranians, the Republicans, and a few infuriating Democrats. It would be a tragedy if these profoundly misguided group of people would be allowed to derail this hard-won victory for peace.
It's been said that this is perhaps the greatest diplomatic success in at least 20 years. Personally, I think a Peace Prize is in order.
