What Donald Trump was up to while John McCain was a prisoner of war

Great detailed article in Washington Post absolutely destroying the Donald. What a jerk.

It was the spring of 1968, and Donald Trump had it good.

He was 21 years old and handsome with a full head of hair. He avoided the Vietnam War draft on his way to earning an Ivy League degree. He was fond of fancy dinners, beautiful women and outrageous clubs. Most important, he had a job in his father’s real estate company and a brain bursting with money-making ideas that would make him a billionaire.

“When I graduated from college, I had a net worth of perhaps $200,000,” he said in his 1987 autobiography “Trump: The Art of the Deal,” written with Tony Schwartz. (That’s about $1.4 million in 2015 dollars.) “I had my eye on Manhattan.”

More than 8,000 miles away, John McCain sat in a tiny, squalid North Vietnamese prison cell. The Navy pilot’s body was broken from a plane crash, starvation, botched operations and months of torture.

and here is a nice supplement on how Trump achieved his own military record

1. $200,000 was a lot more then.

It was probably more like a million dollars.

I graduated in 1971. I had a little student debt, but not much.

Most people graduating now are lucky if they do not have $200,000 in student loans. And the majority of them do not have rich daddies. Their job prospects are poor.

Screw Trump.

7. i didn't face that decision

so i won't judge what people did because i don't know what i would have done. but if i had avoided service i like to think i wouldn't have spit on the troops who didn't or couldn't avoid service, and what is especially offensive is that trump is spittnig on the troops - and he isn't even doing it because he opposed the war, he is doing it to puff himself up.

8. stating that mccain is not a hero is not "spitting on the troops".

Plus "spitting on the troops" was a bullshit meme invented by rightwing revisionists trying to salvage something from the vietnam war disaster. Sure, somebody somewhere spit on somebody in a uniform, but that was not what the antiwar movement was about, and some of the baddest hardcore motherfuckers in the antiwar movement were the well organized vietnam vets against the war, and they wouldn't have put up with that shit for one second.

McCain is not a hero. Enlisting in the military does not make you a hero. Getting your ass shot down while bombing people we should not have been bombing does not make you a hero. Getting captured after getting shot down while bombing people we shouldn't have been bombing doesn't make you hero. Being a prisoner basically because your government refused to negotiate in good faith to end that war for most of your captivity doesn't make you a hero either, it makes your government an asshole regime.

McCain may have been tortured in captivity. If that makes him a hero then that makes everyone we tortured after 9-11 heroes.

10. McCain turned down an early release from his captivity and torture

out of loyalty to his fellow servicemen, knowing it meant more captivity and torture.

I think that's the truly heroic part.

Amazing that he earned so much money while he was still a student.
