A 26-year-old pretty woman named Margarita Walenko. An independent-minded journalist, a correspondent for RT in Ukraine. A mother of two small kids.
For 4 months she received threats by ukrainian nationalists. Then she was gunned down. Three bullets to the back, in the middle of the street. Friends and colleagues brought flowers and candles to the site of her murder.
Major russian news-outlets reported this story.
Except... The Kiev police denies knowledge of this murder. And Russia Today denies that somebody named Margarita Walenko worked for them. And the woman depicted is well and alive and goes by another name. She's actually a journalist for the russian TV-station NTW.
Oops.

And:
"It is not the only hoax, which Russian media made use of in the past few weeks. Since the beginning of July circulating on Kremlin -affiliated websites a letter to US Senator Dick Durbin seems to impose the Ukrainian prime minister, as ministerial posts are to be filled in Kiev. The Komsomolskaya Pravda published the shocking correspondence on 5 July. Here the writing is easy to spot as fake: The English is bumpy, the Senator is called Assistant Minority Leader, although assistant Democratic leader would be correct. "
Yeah, my title is incorrect and misleading. I know. It's what passes for truth nowadays.

guess being anti-anything-west is conflicting with thoughts of, wow- Maybe Putin really is just a fucking nationalistic asshole!

(35,296 posts)4. Early in the game there was one chubby blonde in her 30s or 40s that was always there.
Now she was the mother of a kid killed by rightist forces, now she was some activist, now she was the wife of some soldier or a town leader or a Russian from Kiev or a Russian from the Donbas, now protesting and now a victim and now organizing elections in St Petersburg.
She was a small-time actress from E. Ukraine. On tour. With RT as her marquee.
