A Shout Out to the Great Website Media Whores Online, may it rest in peace

Ah, 2001. The internet was young, but there was an amazing website that told it like it was - and still is. The amazing, unequaled, Media Whores Online, which was unafraid to point out that the grass was green, the sky was blue, and all of those bloviating pontificators on TV really were selling their services for money.

No other website, then or since, has called out the media on its subservient toadying with such anger and such accuracy. Though we may never know exactly who or what forces were behind the Media Horse, I will never forget it.

Using web.archive.org, I have found several old snippets from MWO in its heyday, including this vintage list of its top ten whores from 2001:

Tim Russert - Winner of the Fastest Decline into Whoredom Award

Cokie Roberts - Week after week we watch and wonder how this insipid whore ever got a job on a national news program. Then we wonder why we wonder.. She's shallow, stupid, and sleazy - i.e., highly qualified.

Chris Matthews - Bashed Gore for months and then wept about his "sublime masculinity". Matthews is sublimely whorish.

Andrew Sullivan - Andrew has a dilemma. He's gay, but a "devout" Catholic. Therefore, he has come to oppose most liberal causes, except gay rights. This is Andrew the Guilty Catholic's deal with God: "Let me be gay (he says the Church is "wrong" about homosexuality) and I'll side with the Pope on abortion and bash pro-choice politicians like Clinton and Gore". Hey, who knows. It might work.

Brian Williams - He's so "alarmed". And he can never resist throwing in his own whorish editorial comments. Is it us, or is MSNBC becoming more faux than Faux?

Peggy Noonan - Affected pervert (said Chelsea's holding hands with her dad was 'creepy'). All her columns read like a bad LSD trip.

Matt Drudge - Sees Clinton's crotch in a benign Esquire cover shot. Sees Gore's crotch in the folds of his Dockers. Sees subliminable Democratic crotches everywhere.

David Gergen - Triple agent traitor who's always wrong

Bill O'Reilly - "I'm fair and balanced because one in 6,000 emails calls me a closet liberal".

Tucker Carlson - Lately the most often complained about Media Whore to MWO.

And they nailed 'em first. Got some of my faves on there, but they forgot andrew breitbart - who back then was still alive and making chicken shit out of chicken salad.

2. It was an epic website back when Buzzflash was only a dozen editorials

and articles in the few lefty magazines still being published. The web when I finally got me one o them new fangled computer things was overwhelmingly a sea of nodding Gen X Dittoheads. The left was just getting started online and Media Whores Online was the one site that was completely up and running and out there for all of us.

I'd probably have given up and just used the computer for shopping and occasional forays into IRC if I hadn't found MWO. They sustained me until Bartcop and DU came online.

because over and over they would ask for suggestions for GOOD media, and every time I would submit Amy Goodman. And they never acknowledged her. I assumed it was because they were not familiar with Democracy Now! which was smaller, but still well known among progressives.

Amy Goodman is great, and still practicing actual journalism. Hopefully the Horse has gotten on to her by now.

I guess the premise, that the media are all courtiers in the Versailles of Washington, wouldn't allow that acknowledgment.
