Zombie bands, has-beens and no-talent nepotism beneficiaries unite for the "heritage" excuse:
Gary Rossington, 63, guitarist and sole surviving original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, told the Gainsville Sun Times Wednesday the band would be headlining the inaugural Heritage Not Hate music festival to be held Oct 3-4 at the Lynchburg County Fairgrounds in Lynchburg, VA.
When approached to be a part of this we instantly said yes, without even looking at our current tour itinerary, Rossington said, with everything thats happening in the country right now, we think its important to take a stand and defend not only our personal heritage, but the bands as well.
Now in the aftermath of the Charleston church massacre, what began as scattered calls for removing the Confederate flag from a single state capital has intensified into a nationwide movement to strip the symbol from government buildings, public parks, Internet shopping sites, and retail stores. So far Wal-Mart, Amazon, Sears, and eBay have all stopped selling the flag. Even Warner Brothers announced they will no longer license production of the General Lee, the iconic 69 Dodge Charger from The Dukes of Hazzard that had a Confederate flag painted on its roof.
(...)
Rossington is disappointed in the knee-jerk reaction the country has taken towards the rebel flag, My fallen Skynyrd brothers would be turning in their graves if they could see whats going on, the guitarist said, if Billy and Steve were with us today, they would be first in line to defend our heritage, hell, Ronnie would most likely rough up some of these brain-dead politicians and activists.
(...)
The inaugural Heritage Not Hate music festival will feature two stages and over 30 southern rock and country acts. Some acts already confirmed are: Black Oak Arkansas, North Mississippi All-Stars, The Charlie Daniels Band, Blackberry Smoke, Molly Hatchet, Drive-By Truckers, Blackfoot, Southern Culture on the Skids, Point Blank, Blackstone Cherry, The Outlaws, Hank III, The Georgia Satellites, Jackyl, and .38 Special.

(13,184 posts)A brilliant album that captures life in and the conflicts within the South in the 1970s and 1980s through the prism of Lynyrd Skynrd.
It's very smart and nuanced, and maybe some people would think twice about what they're posting after they listen to it.
And yes, they're playing that show.

(4,229 posts)Several band members are black. Love them and the Truckers. The rest I associate with Angry old Rednecks.
Not sure how Ronnie Van Zant would feel. I mean he wrote a song about gun violence, he was a little ahead of his time, and the flag is a thing of the past.
That said I think the rebel flag has become a symbol of treason and hatred more now than in Skynard's heyday.

ETA: I feel much better now, knowing that this was taken from a satire site. I thought something didn't smell quite right - should have looked into it a little more closely!!

(3,730 posts)The guys in the band now write stuff like this:
Last night I heard this politician
Talkin' 'bout his brand new mission
Liked his plans but they came undone
When it got around to God & guns
I don't know how he grew up
But it sure wasn't down at the huntin' club
'Cause if it was he'd understand
Just a little bit more about the workin' man
God & guns keep us strong
That's what this country was founded on
Well, we might as well give up and run
If we let 'em take our God & guns
Out here in my neck of the woods
Where God is great and guns are good
You really can't know that much about 'em
If you think we're better off without 'em
Oh, there was a time we ain't forgot
You could rest all night with your doors unlocked
But there ain't nobody safe no more
So you say your prayers and you thank the Lord
For that peace maker in the dresser drawer
God & guns keep us strong
That's what this country, Lord, was founded on
Well, we might as well give up and run
If we let 'em take our God & guns
Yeah, we might as well give up and run
If we let 'em take our God & guns
Yeah, oh, God & guns
Don't let 'em take
Don't you let 'em take
Don't let 'em take our God & guns
Oh, God & guns, yeah, keep us strong
That's what this country, Lord, was founded on
Well, we might as well give up and run
If we let 'em take our God & guns

Later this heritage was about denying people their civil rights.
Their heritage is hate.

(59,583 posts)But never mind that, Mr. Rossington. Let's make it aaaaallll about the Lost Cause, m'kay?
Let's roll around in a heroic stew of dysentery, peritonitis, gangrene and (at best) chloroform as an aid to field medicine (brought to you by the Good Ol' Folks who brought you Stones River, Antietam and The Wilderness) and pretend that the associated dogshit stench is in fact Attar of Freedom Roses.

Yeah not exactly a right winger. It was the 70s, and even the South (I was in college there) at least the college students and the rockers, were not right wing material.

(1,846 posts)A sad day for me. The proper response would be to have a concert to unveil a new symbol that can represent positive aspects of southern heritage...not this!
Instead of finding a way to bring us together, they'd rather throw themselves into history's waste bin of misguided soles who happen to be talented musically.
I hope there is another concert by artists who get it right.

(13,184 posts)I think we get carried away with our self-righteousness about the confederate flag and how it can only mean one thing. There's a significant fraction of white southern guys who embrace the flag because it represents their "Southern heritage." And there are good things about the South. I think for these guys, it's rednecky good things: Drinking beer, driving pickups, going hunting and fishing, sweet tea, hospitality--not supporting slavery or being Klansmen.
There's a difference between a klan rally or a Nazi white supremacist music fest and a Lynryd Skynrd concert, even if the flag is evident at both.
And some of these bands are thoughtful, not dinosaurs, and not reactionary. Like the Drive By Truckers, whose stuff I heartily recommend, the North Mississippi All-Stars, and Southern Culture on the Skids.
Let's not turn every Southern white guy into a Klansman.

(2,107 posts)Congratulations! A new cottage industry is blossoming. I'm sure the Chinese factories that make confederate flags are running at full-tilt. Every right wing thrall is going to need to have at least three confederate flags (and one to hide in the wall in case the black helicopters come).
In the meantime, TPP is put back on track, with hardly a word said about it. Look liberals -- shiny object dangling! Pay no attention to that really important, life-changing thing going through congress! Look over here ... Dangle-Dangle!
