...might future historians say that in these two weeks in June, 2015, America's descent into madness was finally halted? I dunno...maybe I'm being overoptimistic, but it sure seems that *something* fundamental is different. I feel hopeful right now, in a way I haven't in decades. No, I'm not supposing that the GOP crazies are going away, or that they don't control most of the country, nor, hopefully, am I underestimating any of the difficulties that we face. But I do finally feel--even on some intuitive level--that just maybe, the worst will be over soon, and the pendulum *finally* is swinging in the right direction again. The shooting in Charleston has done something to this country. Add to it the ACA and gay marriage victories...the fact that everyone now is abandoning the Confederate flag...even the debate over the TPP, whoever wins, and the Dems showing some backbone... But I am feeling different. Let's hope the trends continue...

(82,849 posts)Why don't we keep fighting? We're on kind of a winning streak since young Roof decided to act out some of the darker fantasies deep in the reactionary psyche.

(60,536 posts)whether the fever has broken. The backlash on marriage; the full scope of it, e.g. do Santorum, Jindal, Huckabee, et al., keep pushing for action on marriage, dragging it into the 2016 campaign or, do they stfu and slink off quietly into the night, will determine a great deal. How ministers react will be important, also; will the guy that threatened to torch himself if marriage was approved, do it? All of this unfolds with the backdrop of the confederate flag issue. If state's really, really send the flag to the museum and there is a very light backlash to that sending, as well as marriage, the fever will have broken.

(17,663 posts)that we all become fearless and speak up!
I also have taken to calling GOP offices to be snarky with them...It is very therapeutic and builds up one's sense of power!
A few weeks ago I told off a fresh young faced Baptist recruiting for his church. I started nicely, saying I wasn't a believer and built up my case and as he turned away from my gate I told him he was intolerant and SMUG!! He whined that I was "intolerant" and I told him I'd heard enough of his nonsense....He was really taken aback...no one had challenged him before! Because, they've all been "duggerized" to a degree, they are precious, they can do no wrong! With my "family"...well, they're out of our wills!!
They need to start hearing from us and having their F*cking bubbles burst!!!

(8,636 posts)Quoting Thomas Jefferson:
"A little patience and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. . . If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."
