With nine dead black human beings, and their murderers photo shown with the Confederate flag, Republicans have realized that they have to distance themselves from the symbol of the flag. But are they distancing themselves from what it stands for?
I dont think so.
The good ole boy GOP is still all in favor of voter ID, cleansing voter lists, machines that flip votes, and the (dog whistle) racism from FOX news, Limbaugh and all the others that make up the herd of hatred.
If holding onto power means dumping the flag, okay, but dont expect them to change who and what they are. Getting rid of that Southern Heritage rag is nothing more than giving up a symbol that has become too obviously toxic. But look behind the symbol and youll still see the same Southern Strategy Party that exists in every congressional district of ignorance throughout the country.
Dont let them fool you. They are still all for the white power and privilege structure and getting rid of that flag doesnt change it.

(50,261 posts)Certainly it's an offensive symbol and has to go, BUT Roof didn't strangle those 9 people with a cloth flag. He used a gun. The gun debate that normally ensues after a mass shooting is missing as a result of the flag debate. Not that it matters, I suppose. Nothing will happen re guns if it didn't happen after Sandy Hook, but it would be nice if the talking heads mentioned it for a second in between laments about the bloody flag.

(15,035 posts)another nine deaths, added to the thousands who have already died over the past 150 years since the Civil War. Who knows how many more deaths it will take to get rid of the guns?
And you're right. Sandy Hook didn't change the gun culture. i believe that nothing will happen with guns until the NRA becomes as toxic as the Confederate flag.
