Tropical Storm Bill could form off Texas coast Monday night, National Hurricane Center says

An area of low pressure located about 200 miles southeast of the mid-Texas coast could become Tropical Storm Bill later Monday evening (June 15), the National Hurricane Center said.

Observations from a Hurricane Hunter aircraft showed the system had become better defined than earlier in the day, according to Michael Brennan, a senior hurricane specialist. Data from the Air Force Reserve aircraft showed maximum sustained winds near 50 mph.

"Interests in and along the northwestern Gulf of Mexico should continue to monitor the progress of this system as it moves northwestward toward the Texas coast," Brennan wrote in the NHC's 7 p.m. tropical update.

"Regardless of tropical cyclone formation, tropical storm conditions are likely along portions of the middle and upper Texas coast, and possible in extreme southwestern Louisiana, tonight and Tuesday."

The system is also likely to bring heavy rainfall with possible flooding across portions of eastern Texas and western Louisiana. Landfall was expacted between Galveston and Corpus Chrisi Tuesday afternoon, forecasters said.

The predictions are still all over the place as to rainfall. (Part of me says, 'They're just playing it safe, and we'll get 3-5", not 7-10". And that's over 36 hours, which is entirely manageable in most places.)

It's barely rained in most places around here (I'm just N of Houston) in the last 10-12 days, but some showers have gone through already to help re-saturate the ground.

It's be interesting to see whose models are right. The Europeans say less rather than more rain. They've got a fairly good track record, since they invested a ton of money in supercomputers that they use for weather forecasting. (By comparison, the US has invested a ton of money in supercomputers that they mostly have used for global warming models.)
