Diane Rehm Presses Sanders On Whether He’s US-Israel Dual Citizen

Source: TPM

An interview with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) stopped in its tracks on Wednesday when NPR's Diane Rehm repeatedly pressed the Democratic presidential candidate whether he was a citizen of Israel.

"Senator, you have dual citizenship with Israel," Rehm said during the interview on her nationally broadcast show based on station WAMU.

"Well, no I do not have dual citizenship with Israel," Sanders, who is Jewish, interjected. "I'm an American. I don't know where that question came from. I am an American citizen, and I have visited Israel on a couple of occasions. I'm an American citizen, period."

Rehm cited "a list we have gotten" at NPR that said Sanders was "on that list."

They're asking Sanders about his citizenship because of his RELIGION...neither he nor his parents were born in Israel, which is a nation regarded as the spiritual home of the Jewish faith.

newbie anti-Semite falsely claiming Chuck Schumer is a citizen of Israel (the old dual loyalty card)

JURY RESULTS

A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Tue Mar 31, 2015, 03:52 PM, and voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT ALONE.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It appears others think Schumer has dual citizenship, Can you offer proof it's a false statement?

Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: So debunk it. Doubt poster will last, but I don't think it's hide-worthy.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Anti-semitic
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: I'm taking your word for it about the fake citizenship claim.
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: A rather bumpy intro to DU, but don't judge based on one post. I suspect MIRT will be watching post #2 to see where this goes. Tread lightly new guy.

Why so early in the campaign? If anything, the possibility exists it was a way to exploit anti-Semitism on the left and start a "whisper" campaign against Sanders. Jews are usually considered the responsible actors for many conspiracy theories, when the truth is we are usually the ones on the other end of the conspiracy!

Right of return law with citizenship.

Ireland has something similar...If your parent/grandparent (one or several) were citizens, then you can get citizenship too.

Lots of nations have laws on these lines. Since Israel is a new nation, the pool of eligible is everyone who qualified for citizenship when the nation was founded.

I am not endorsing, excusing or excoriating her actions. I barely am aware of this woman. I have heard her program a few times.

I realize she has a chronic condition that makes her voice shake and change timbre, I'd know if I was a regular listener. To be frank, if the interview isn't compelling, I'm changing the station, as that timbre isn't easy on the ears. If I hear her at all on my own accord, I'm in the car. If I hear her in a home setting, it's at the house of a family member who has NPR on around the clock.

I'm looking at the simple facts here and this is what I come up with:

--She is an older woman. Is she internet-savvy? Did she retrieve that material herself, or was it handled to her? If it was handled to her, who did that? Could she have been "Dan Rathered" ahead of the general election, to silence one of the few remaining liberal voices at NPR?

--She is a Arab Christian whose parents emigrated from non-Arab Turkey (what brought them to Turkey, I wonder?). Does she labor under ancestral biases that inform her perspective? What are those biases, if they exist? Were her ancestor Arab tenants in Palestine under an Ottoman landlord, for example? That could be a basis for formation of a point of view.

--She has apologized, used the S word (sorry) and said that she made a mistake. She did that quickly, too, no shilly shallying or trying to suggest she was misinterpreted. Is that enough, or should she apologize to every American of Jewish heritage? Was she confusing Right of Return laws under the Israeli constitution with actively-sought out dual citizenship, or was she being deliberate, and will she explain how she came to pursue this line of inquiry with Senator Sanders?

That's where I'm at. I'm not here to bury her, or to praise her. My pitchforks are staying in the barn for now, and I'm not lighting any torches either. I need more details as to what she was thinking, and how she came to think this angle was productive. The GOP are very good at getting their enemies to eat their own, and I'm not going to rush to judgment yet.

One thing that this incident does highlight is the reaction that people will naturally have when it's THEIR ox being gored. I've noticed, often, too, on this board and elsewhere how people with objections are told

--How they are supposed to feel, how they are supposed to think, and why their reactions are "wrong" or unfounded, or

--What the person saying the offensive comments/doing the offensive things actually MEANT, as though one's eyes or ears were somehow deceiving them.

I'm not in that club. That shit is a two-way street, too, so people who are concerned about this matter should take pains to keep their "empathy" caps close to hand when they see others upset about perceived slurs on the basis of gender, orientation or race. Very recently I have observed some people with hair on fire over this perceived insult who played the "Get over it" card when snarky remarks were made about Caitlyn nee Bruce Jenner, and when a crude spoonerism was lobbed at SOS Clinton. We all need to walk a kilometer (hat tip to Linc Chaffee) in our neighbors' flip-flops every now and again.

Sooooooo. ... No rush to judgment--we've got plenty of time to figure this out.

difficult to understand how it went down as a gaffe. Look at how she reacts to Sanders
in the response from the transcript. One of her replies to him is: Interesting...and she keeps
going forward with it. He shuts it down.

If her staff wrote her a source stating, water is not actually wet and she went with it as
a source for her show and did not back down when addressed, she'd be laughed out of her
job. Here she is confronted with a bullshit source any sensible person who fits her job description
should recognize but she went with it anyway...pathetic.

Sadly, he will have to deal with this over and over. What's really fucked up?! His stating, unequivocally, that is only an American, will still not be believed because "someone saw his name on a list". To think, just a few days ago, more than few were telling us his being Jewish "wouldn't be a big deal", "most people don't even know", Jews aren't "really" a minority.

It is what is.

Programming at NPR stations is done locally. Local stations choose what programs they wish to pick up and air. The Diane Rehm show, like most public radio shows, is syndicated. It's probably best to complain to your local station. Tell them you won't support them, etc.

EDITED to change embarrassing typo of "pubic" radio to "public." Honestly, it was just a typo.

http://www.jewishjournal.com/mostthingsconsidered/item/did_npr_host_diane_rehm_just_accuse_bernie_sanders_of_being_an_israeli_citi

A cursory search on Google of “Bernie Sanders Israeli citizenship” shows that his name comes up in the comments section of the “We are all Vittorio Arrigoni” Facebook page. Arrigoni was an Italian pro-Palestinian activist who was kidnapped and murdered by non-Hamas Islamists in Gaza in April 2011. In the comments section of the Facebook page, on May 2 a user posted a list of senators and representatives who “have both Israel and U.S. citizenships.” Sanders is on the list. No source is given because the list is a total fabrication, not to mention created by an anti-Semite and anti-Zionist, which is given away by the fact that it says “Jewish Lobby”, “#israelwarcrime”, “AIPAC: Buying Congress one seat at a time”, “Rothschild”, and features an American flag with a Star of David replacing the 50 stars.

Wed Jun 10, 2015, 04:01 PM

NPR host Diane Rehm apparently fell for an internet hoax today when she falsely asserted that Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders held dual citizenship with Israel, forcing the Senator to snap back at the claim as “nonsense” on the internet and “absolutely not true.”

Sanders: I honestly don’t know but I have read that on the internet. You know, my dad came to this country from Poland at the age of 17 without a nickel in his pocket. He loved this country. I am, you know, I got offended a little bit by that comment, and I know it’s been on the internet. I am obviously an American citizen and I do not have any dual citizenship.

A quick Google search reveals Sanders’ name included in bizzare Facebook groups and forums that go back to 2008, purporting to list all former government officials holding dual Israeli-American citizenship.

She has written two autobiographical books. The first, Finding My Voice, dealt with her traditional upbringing in a Christian Arab household

I would think that a supposed liberal from a Christian Arab household would be more informed than she appeared when she basically told Bernie he was an Israeli citizen! My bet is that she knew damn well what she was doing and had her own reasons, not reasons from NPR or the Koch brothers.

If my supposition is true, it shows she has a real blind spot. I've listened to her fairly regularly and consider her to be mostly liberal, but Israel/Jewish religion may be something she's not liberal about.

But it will just backfire on them. Let them go debate him, rather than hire their usual tools to smear those who dare to tell the truth about them.

They are targeting him, as was reported. If you agree with this kind of behind the scenes tactic, fine, I do not. Even if it is against Republicans. It is destroying our electoral system and I hope that it does backfire on them, people are sick of it.

I already told you several times that Bernie Sanders would face attacks on being Jewish. Maybe I have a crystal ball?

NPR and Diane Rheme are the tip of the iceberg if you think that was something to get upset over. It was nothing like you will hear if Bernie is the Democratic candidate.

Yes, it's funny that some people are "clueless" after all the lies about Obama's birth certificate. Same thing about Benghazi! If you are going to spread unfounded attacks about Hillary or anyone else, then you won't mind if there are unfounded attacks on Bernie.

You decide. Do you want a list of targets you'll see next. I'll predict one more: Bernie's wife's finances! Let me know when that one shows up. It's a matter of time. After that one appears I'll predict another. I have a list.

Anything with a "possible" scandal, even if it's not true, will magically show up. Anything that can't be proven or unproven, but has a little hint of innuendo will be used as an ambush. You'll see.

You see Cali, if you live by the sword and die by the sword. You have no complaints since you are one of the purveyors of the exact same bashing.
