Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said in an interview published Tuesday that because hes unmarried, the White House would have a rotating first lady if he were elected President.
Grahams comments were made during an interview with the Daily Mail Online in which the 59-year-old discussed his 2016 presidential candidacy, which hed announced on June 1.
Well, Ive got a sister. She could play that role if necessary, Graham said. Ive got a lot of friends. Well have a rotating first lady.
Im actually a fun guy. I'm a lot of fun to hang around with. Just ask people who know me, Graham said. I think I've got a pretty good reputation of bein' easygoing.
If elected, Graham would be the first bachelor President since Woodrow Wilson and would be only the third U.S. President to be sworn into office unmarried. James Buchanan and Grover Cleveland are the two other Presidents who hold this distinction, although Buchanan was the only President to have remained a bachelor.

(90,625 posts)He does have a point though: nowhere in the Constitution does it state that a candidate must bring a spouse along to act as unpaid hostess and social secretary in the White House.

(19,460 posts)Didn't at least one president have his daughter acting as hostess at the WH? I don't think Lindsay has a daughter but I suppose his sister would work.

(90,625 posts)Isn't Lindsay a confirmed bachelor, as they used to say in the olden days?

(53,661 posts)President Often Feels Button Put There 'Just To Taunt' Him. The president says the button is "constantly" in the corner of his eye.
ISSUE 4719 May 11, 2011
WASHINGTON - Despite being constantly tempted by the seductive power of having an apocalyptic arsenal at his fingertips, President Barack Obama somehow made it through another day Tuesday without unlocking the box on his desk that houses "the button" and launching all 5,113 U.S. nuclear warheads...
"Did you know that if you sort of put enough weight on the button with your fingertip, you can feel a little slack there before it actually clicks?" Obama added. "Thank you, and God bless America..."
"But it's hard not to dare myself to do it. It's like I'm standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon, taking it all in, and I'm one millisecond away from saying to myself, 'Fuck it, Barack. Just jump...'"
During a deficit-reduction meeting last Monday with House Speaker John Boehner, the president's index finger was reportedly resting on the button the entire time without his even realizing it...
Historians have noted that a strong desire to press the button is not uncommon among U.S. presidents. After just one year in office, Jimmy Carter wrote in his diary, "You don't leave a man alone in a room with a button like that," and two years later the pages were simply covered with the word "button" over and over again. In 1974, Richard Nixon rapidly pressed the button 12 times just prior to his resignation, but Pentagon officials had already disconnected its triggering mechanism...

I don't think we have a chance of snowball in hell with Lindsay in office. Just think about it...

(7,231 posts)There is no need for the office of the First Lady. There is no constitutional requirement for the president to be married, or provide a permanent hostess for any official functions at the White House.
ANY woman may be asked to perform that service to her country, whether she is married to the president or not. If the president asks her, that's reason enough for everybody to be fine with it.
And in these enlightened times, maybe we could turn that into: any MAN OR WOMAN could perform that function. (Gender distinctions are SO last century.)
