lets start with an update
i started these after reading a series of posts in a thread that suggested someone do this look at all the states
the thread was about regionalism and how hurtful and misplaced it can be
when you talk about someones home you talk about them
i am a southerner by way of tennessee georgia florida and texas
these have all at some point been my home and none are perfect or approaching that perfection
but to those of us who live there...its our home dammit
so someone said "how come they shit on the south but if i say i am going to mississippi all i get is where to go and what to eat and what to see?" get it?...if you talk in terms of region then the knives come out but if you speak in specifics about individual states then du is a friendlier place.
the posters found it odd and so did i so
i started this series
i comeon and draw a line drawing of each state and then you guys ,the ones who live there,or have been there, are the detail people
if you go and look back at the ones already done you will see that duers love their homes and thats capital L love
they know what makes their little corner unique and they know where the good stuff is
and like i always find when i look for the generous soul of du these duers share these places
when i visit some i havent been to i now am loaded with tips
so if you read them before here they come again
i need you to jump in and tell us about your place
oh one more thing
i pointed at the south above and i am not saying regionalist thinking is confined there
its just where i am so i use myself as the example
now i am off to learn about new mexico
New Mexico is beautiful, another state that residents can be proud about.

(30,736 posts)in New Mexico, with a friend who lives near there. It is beautiful. There are cliff dwellings there, too. I loved visiting them.
New Mexico is great!

(13,390 posts)of the country. The regions are definitely distinct. Southeast MO borders Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. It is most definitely part of THE SOUTH. Although some parts are really pretty, much of the Ozark territory is kind of dark at this point. Some Christian Identity groups have settled there and meth has become a dominant industry.
Northward to STL spills over into IL and is culturally closer to Chicago than it is to any where else in the state.
KC spills into KS and is a classic heartland city. It's a cow town famous for BBQ, and steak. Sadly, the jazz scene relocated. There is a more diverse music scene, now.
The northland borders Iowa and they grow a lot of corn in the plains territory up there. SW Missouri is also distinctly southern but it is different from SE Missouri. It borders Oklahoma and they raise a lot of cattle- contributing to the famous KC food industry.
The center is very different from the rest because of it's diversity. Boone County contains a small urban area surrounded by several rural towns\territories. The major Mo university is in Columbia and it brings and international flavor. There are 2 other colleges. With a pop of 100,000 academia rules. A range of restaurants\activities and thriving downtown combined with a definite small town atmosphere make it unique.
I have heard it described as the northernmost southern state. The northern portion prevented it from joining the south during the civil war but not without controversy and protest.
