Rep. John Delaney (Md.), a centrist House Democrat, on Friday warned that voices on the left have "hijacked" his partys message.
"With Washington already broken, the last thing we need is a left-wing version of the tea party," Delaney wrote in a Washington Post op-ed published online Thursday evening. "But I am worried about where some of the loudest voices in the room could take the Democratic Party."
He said Democrats' "party microphone has been hijacked by people more interested in scoring points than in solving problems."

"A fair trade deal is a crucial step in bolstering the U.S. manufacturing renaissance, boosting U.S. exports and growing our economy," Delaney wrote. "Unfortunately, Democratic recalcitrance is increasing the chance that the deal could be done instead by a Republican president."
Aside from trade, Delaney criticized those in his party advocating to expand Social Security, something Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has been pushing in his presidential bid.
"They propose expanding Social Security rather than prioritizing serious efforts to preserve the program even though it will be unable to provide full benefits as soon as 2032, the Congressional Budget Office has made clear," Delaney said. "The only way a large-scale expansion could work is by allocating new revenue away from needed investments in the next generation or by shifting the financial burden to workers or our children."
Delaney also criticized those in his party who he said want to "relitigate the financial crisis" of 2008.

(5,213 posts)With the Republican party openly becoming insane we have more than a fair share of folks who would have been Republicans just 10-20 years ago. Problem is, like the Rep quoted above, they are still pushing moderate Republican economic policy.

Such men will always rail against "the left" as though it's something new and aberrant. It's not.
The call for economic justice is as old as the human race. Men like Delaney are deaf to it.

so to Mr. Delaney , Democrats must obey and allow the corporate takeover of the party
Of course he doesn't care about issues that affect the poor and middle class when you millions sitting in your account ( John K. Delaney (D-Md) ranks 2nd in the House with an estimated net worth* of $222,410,577 in 2013.) http://www.opensecrets.org/pfds/summary.php?cid=N00033897&year=2013

Like Hubert Humphrey said,you have to perkulate the economy from the bottom up and not from the top down. Another clue is,do you know what the price of a loaf of bread is,when you do not know,you are very well off and you need to share your wealth or get back to reality.

(59,213 posts)more and more evidence that an awful lot of current Democratic politicians are simply republican lite - more concerned with their own wealth than their supposed constituents.
"centrist" and "moderate" and "libertarian" - probably undecided and independent as well - are just synonyms for "conservative republicans" that don't have the guts to say it. It's all about them and only them and their needs.

(7,865 posts)I would expect any third-way democrat to complain about this regardless of who was running for president. To me it is less about hillary and more about the ideology of the third way people. It is a failed strategy that does nothing to forward progressive ideas or values.
I imagine Rahm Immanuel will say something about it. Max Bacchus or Steny Hoyer will probably chime in as well bemoaning the idea that the democrats have gone too far to the left.

FDR Economic Bill of Rights
Among these are:
*The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;
*The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
*The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
*The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
*The right of every family to a decent home;
*The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
*The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;
*The right to a good education.
All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.
---FDR, 1944, SOTU
Please note that the above are stipulated as Basic Human RIGHTS to be protected by our government,
and NOT as COMMODITIES to be SOLD to Americans by For Profit Corporations.
There was a time when voting FOR The Democrat
was voting FOR the above values.
Sadly, this is no longer true.

(16,644 posts)Really, the best thing they could do for the country, and for the GOP is to join the GOP all at once. Take all the blue dogs and all the Third Way bunch, as well as the former DLC'ers. Take the whole gang and in one day switch to the GOP. Then we'd have a true opposition party and we could have these debates. It's be the best thing they could do for the country. It would overwhelm the nut jobs in the GOP and they'd either go all "third party" or just stop voting. And we could go back to the days of Eisenhower and Rockefeller and debate just what Social Security should be, not IF it should be. We could discuss gun control, and international policy, and monetary policy, and trade.....
Instead we have the nut jobs versus the adults in the room.

And that is why the Democratic Party is in trouble, as long as the Third Way Democrats continue to carry the wrong message to the people.
Thank $DEITY_OF_CHOICE for Bernie Sanders, someone who will be able to steer his and the progressive's messages to the people.
Everyone is starting to learn about Bernie Sanders, and hot-diggity-dog, if Bernie is not a dead heat by the time the debates roll around, he certainly will be beyond that.

No mention of raising the cap on income that is subject to social security taxes. No, the "only" way is to take money away from needed investments or by taking it from our children. Sick stuff.

(32,139 posts)He apparently didn't get the memo that the Third Way candidate is now pretending to be a populist right now, and that the open touting of right-wing, predatory, liberal-punching talking points is best left until AFTER the new corporate puppet has been installed.
This is the phase of the con game during which the Third Way is supposed to pretend to be as passionate about liberal issues as the rest of us, while lying to our faces that they just support a slower, more "pragmatic" route to the goal.
The implementation of a corporate authoritarian state is clearly a necessary incremental step in the long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long. long, long journey toward a liberal, compassionate future.
They can't tell us people with limited smartness why, though. It's a secret.

And the only Democratic versions of the Tea Party are the so-called "centrists" themselves, who, like the Teabaggers, cannot distinguish policies that provide checks and balances on economic power from a membership application to the Warsaw Pact.

I've seen that against President Obama.. basically calling him a "liar" and "sexist".. to score points. Their bullshite isn't true.
Key legislation Delaney has sponsored:
Veterans' Advisory Committee on Education Improvement Act of 2013 (H.R. 2011; 113th Congress) - a bill that would extend through the end of 2015 the Veterans' Advisory Committee on Education and change its membership.
Partnership to Build America Act of 2013 (H.R. 2084; 113th Congress) - a bill that would establish the American Infrastructure Fund (AIF).
Medical Foods Equity Act of 2013 (H.R. 3665; 113th Congress) - a bill that would extend coverage of medical foods, vitamins, and amino acids to those with metabolic disorders. [19]
