Not Safe For Work
Snoop Dogg is high on Hillary Clinton.
The Gin & Juice rapper said hell be supporting the former secretary of State and Democratic candidate in her 2016 White House bid.
You know I like to be politically correct, but sometimes Im politically incorrect, Snoop Dogg said when asked about his political pick on Bravos Watch What Happens Live on Sunday. But Ill say that I would love to see a woman in office because I feel like were at that stage in life to where we need a perspective other than the males train of thought.
And just to have a woman speaking from a global perspective as far as representing America, Id love to see that. So Ill be voting Ms. Clinton, he added.
Snoop Dogg is the latest high-profile entertainer to throw his support behind Clinton in the last few days. In similar remarks to ITK last week, R&B star Ne-Yo called Clinton a favorite of mine.

Shortly after graduating from high school, he was arrested for possession of cocaine and for the following three years was frequently in and out of prison.[9] In 1990, he was convicted of felony possession of drugs and possession for sale.[101]
While recording Doggystylein August 1993, Snoop Dogg was arrested in connection with the death of Phillip Woldermariam, a member of a rival gang who was shot and killed by Snoop's bodyguard, McKinley Lee; Snoop was charged with murder along with Lee as he was driving the vehicle from which the shooting had commenced. Snoop and Lee were defended by Johnnie Cochran.[102] Both Snoop and Lee were acquitted; Lee was acquitted on grounds of self-defense, but Snoop Dogg remained entangled in the legal battles around the case for three years.[103]
In July 1993, Snoop was stopped for a traffic violation and a firearm was found by police while conducting a search of his car. In February 1997, he pleaded guilty to possession of a handgun and was ordered to record three public service announcements, pay a $1,000 fine, and serve three years' probation.[104][105][106]
Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, and The Gamewere sued for assaulting a fan on stage at a May 2005 concert at the White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Washington. The accuser, Richard Monroe, Jr., claimed he was beaten by the artists' entourage while mounting the stage, allegedly after an "open invite".[107] The lawsuit, which sought $22 million in damages, was dismissed in 2009.[108]
In September 2006, Snoop Dogg was detained at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California by airport security, after airport screeners found a collapsible police baton in Snoop's carry-on bag. Donald Etra, Snoop's lawyer, told deputies the baton was a prop for a musical sketch. Snoop was sentenced to three years' probation and 160 hours of community service for the incident starting in September 2007.[109]Snoop Dogg was arrested again October 2006 at Bob Hope Airport in Burbankafter being stopped for a traffic infraction; he was found in possession of marijuana and a firearm, according to a police statement. The following month, after performing onThe Tonight Show with Jay Leno, he was arrested again for possession of marijuana and a firearm.[110] In April 2007, he was sentenced to a three-year suspended sentence, five years' probation, and was required to perform 800 hours of community service after pleading no contest to two felony charges of drug and gun possession by a convicted felon.[101]
In April 26, 2006, Snoop Dogg and members of his entourage were arrested after being turned away from British Airways' first class lounge at Heathrow Airport. Snoop and his party were denied entry to the lounge due to some members flying in economy class. After being escorted outside, the group vandalized a duty-free shop with whiskey bottles. Seven police officers were injured in the midst of the disturbance. After a night in jail, Snoop and the other men were released on bail the next day, but he was unable to perform a scheduled concert inJohannesburg.[111] On May 15, the Home Officedecided that Snoop Dogg would be denied entry to the United Kingdom for the foreseeable future, and his British visa was denied the following year.[112][113][114]As of March 2010, Snoop Dogg has been allowed back into the UK.[115] The group involved in the incident have been banned by British Airways for "the foreseeable future."[116]
In April 2007, the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship banned him from entering the country on character grounds, citing his prior criminal convictions. He had been scheduled to appear at theMTV Australia Video Music Awards on April 29, 2007.[117] AustralianDepartment of Immigration and Citizenship lifted the ban in September 2008 and had granted him visa to tour Australia. DIAC said: "In making this decision, the department weighed his criminal convictions against his previous behaviour while in Australia, recent conduct including charity work and any likely risk to the Australian community ... We took into account all relevant factors and, on balance, the department decided to grant the visa."[118]
He was banned from entering Norway for two years in July 2012 after entering the country the month before in possession of 8 grams of weed and an undeclaredkr 227,000 in cash.[119][120][121]
Snoop Dogg has also been arrested and fined for misdemeanor marijuana possession in Los Angeles in 1998,[122] in Cleveland in 2001,[123] and Sierra Blanca, Texas in 2010.

(8,352 posts)I already have all of Snoop's music.
And if his only reason for voting for Sanders was because he wants an older white male perspective on politics, I would think he was just as ignorant and uninformed as I do his preference for Clinton based on her gender.

(99,710 posts)He's actually a funny and witty guy...I heard him a couple of times on the Howard Stern show back in the 90s and he was really funny and insightful.

(8,352 posts)But his reasons for voting for Clinton have little to nothing to do with her policies and positions and rather are about her gender.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)When Sonia Sotomayor said "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life " folks here defended her from right wing attacks.
TM99
(8,352 posts)it has nothing to do with Snoop and his ringing endorsement of Clinton just because she is a woman.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)Ms. Sotomayor said she would be a better jurist than a white male because of her race and gender which I don't totally agree with... I would agree that diversity improves an institution because the more viewpoints the better...
All Mr. Broadus said is he is supporting Secretary OF state Clinton because the institution of the presidency would benefit from having a woman at the helm.
TM99
(8,352 posts)Choosing any leader solely on the basis of their gender is a non-starter for me.
Snoop did not give any other reasons why Clinton was his choice.

(99,710 posts)Here's her quote:
I don't see a reference to her resume or curriculum vitae.
I used to hire people...All things being equal I always hired the minority applicant because I felt they worked harder to get where they were but Ms. Sotomayor's formulation is a bit stark.
TM99
(8,352 posts)Get off your soapbox and back on topic.
Sotomayor was speaking about herself AFTER her resume got her to the consideration of the position. There is and was more to her than just being a Hispanic woman.
Snoopo is speaking about Clinton. He does not reference her positions, her policies, etc. He only says that what he thinks would make her the best candidate is her feminity.
Not. The. Same. Thing.

But she knew that even when a minority has a thick resume, they are not favored as much as their majority counterpart.

(99,710 posts)I said , ad infinitum and ad nauseum, I have no problem using race and gender as a criterion when it comes to hiring because folks need their professions and institutions to look like them ... In fact in this very thread I said I used it myself when making hiring decisions.
I just pointed out it shouldn't cause folks agita because Snoop said he would vote for Hillary because she's a woman.
Some times you arrive at truth in a funny way. You could say that Ms. Clinton has a thicker resume than all the other candidates, Democratic and Republican, who are running for president in 2016.

(99,710 posts)Broadus was born October 20, 1971, at the Los Altos Hospital in Long Beach, California, the second of three sons. He was named after his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Sr. (December 10, 1948 November 9, 1985, Los Angeles). His mother is Beverly Broadus (née Tate; born April 27, 1951, McComb, Mississippi)] His father, Vernall Varnado (born December 13, 1949, Magnolia, Mississippi), was a Vietnam veteran, singer, and mail carrier who was said to be frequently absent from his life.[8] As a boy, his parents nicknamed him "Snoopy" because of his appearance, but they usually addressed him as Calvin at home. His mother and stepfather divorced in 1975.
At an early age, Broadus began singing in Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church and playing piano; when he was in sixth grade, he began rapping. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School, graduating class of 1989.
As a teenager, Snoop Dogg frequently ran into trouble with the law. He was a member of the Rollin' 20 Crips gang in the Eastside of Long Beach, although he stated in 1993 that he never joined a gang. Shortly after graduating from high school, he was arrested for possession of cocaine, and for the following three years was frequently in and out of prison (including Wayside Jail). Snoop, along with his cousins Nate Dogg and Lil' ½ Dead and friend Warren G, recorded homemade tapes as a group called 213, named after the Long Beach area code at the time. One of his early solo freestyles over En Vogue's "Hold On" had made it to a mixtape which was heard by influential producer Dr. Dre, who phoned to invite him to an audition. Former N.W.A member The D.O.C. taught him how to structure his lyrics and separate the thematics into verses, hooks and chorus.

(99,710 posts)Let's stipulate that Mr. Broadus is a shrewd businessman with a great deal of native intelligence that he married to God given lyrical and musical talent. He would not have got from where he was to where he is if he wasn't. A man of his business acumen would be aware that there are candidates who would be much more sympathetic to protecting his wealth and others in his economic bracket and the propagation of it than Secretary Of State Clinton.
"Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Maybe Mr. Broadus supports the Secretary Of State because her and her husband were/are immensely popular in the community where he was raised and that informs his views...You can bookmark this post. That's why Ms. Clinton will receive over ninety percent of the vote in the precinct where he was raised in the primaries and the general election.

White singers deserve the same scrutiny for sexism as Snoop Dogg
Yesterday, Snoop Lion (formerly Snoop Dogg, real name Calvin Broadus) had been granted a visa to perform at this years Big Day Out festival. This was despite of the efforts of Collective Shout, an activist group against the objectification and sexualisation of women which petitioned to have his visa refused on the basis of lyrics' misogyny, his criminal history and his previous work as a pimp.
This is not the first time the organisation has protested against an artist on the basis of them glorifying violence against women. In 2013, Collective Shout called on the Australia government to revoke the visa of rapper Tyler the Creator. His music is relatively well known outside his fan base due to its graphic depictions of rape and murder (though it has been noted that he has toned his lyrics down on his latest album). In 2011, the organisation co-sponsored a petition against another rapper, Kanye West, to block his music video for Monster due to its eroticised violence.

Collective Shouts petition to revoke Snoop Lions visa states, as a society which claims to be serious about eradicating violence against women, there should be no place for recording artists who glorify misogyny and degrade women for entertainment.
So if we agree with this statement, then not only would there be no place for the rappers mentioned above, but also:
What follows is a (clearly truncated) list of a dozen bands or artists guilty of violent misogynistic lyrics and five contemporary artists guilty of domestic violence. They are, notably, not black.
Your excision exemplifies the editorial's central tenet.
Sleep tight.

(10,274 posts)Are those other bands relevant to the conversation, are they being touted as hip endorsements for Hillary? Should we give snoop a pass cause white bands are misogynist too?
I think you missed the point completely, maybe you forgot what this thread was about.
It's mid day here in Japan. I have a lot to do before bedtime.

(7,143 posts)You picked the cite. The excerpt you chose was an indictment of your specific contempt, as the editorial indicates.
I didn't miss the point at all.

(93 posts)August 2003 - Snoop was named in an affidavit claiming that he and the makers of the "Girls Gone Wild: Doggy Style" tape lured two underage girls to take their tops off for the camera by offering them marijuana and ecstasy. The suit was settled in July 2004.
August 1993 - Snoop was charged for being an accomplice to the murder of Phillip Woldermarian. In February 1996, with the help of attorney Jonnie Cochran, Snoop was found not guilty of all charges but voluntary manslaughter, on which the jury deadlocked
It seems unlikely that he's had his rights restored because he's continued to run afoul of the law into 2010 and after.

I'm pretty certain that if Snoop has ... someone on DU would have been telling me that I should support Bernie cuz Snoop does.

Anyway, about 10 years ago I was trying out Internet dating, had lunch with a woman who worked for Gallo Wines in Modesto.
She asked what CD I was listening to in my car driving down. It happened to be a mix with some Eminem and Snoop, a student burned it for me.
When I told her the answer, she replied, "Oh, I won't let my kids listen to that nig*** music".
Thankfully, lunch was about done and I said I had to go, and I got up and went.

We were in the chatting room, I had plans to join a friend who had tickets for an afternoon with the Dalai Lama at the Shoreline Amphitheater, a place that usually has music acts.
"So, NYC, what are you doing this weekend?"
"I'm going to see the Dalai Lama at the Shoreline Amphitheater."
"Oh! What kind of music do they play?"

(9,086 posts)just the whole bitches and hos thing should be buried. And like if you take a look at any genre, like rock music for example, you will find tons of garbage.
But also there is a lot of great hip hop that is socially conscious or political. It doesn't get as much attention and promotion though. And then there is a lot that is just fun or neutral.
And honestly I actually do like Snoop Dogg but
1) Not enough to take his political advice and
2) He should stop calling women bitches and hos
