Edward Snowden is a hero. Crimes by our government against us
extend even beyond the illegal collection of metadata. We live in a sweeping corporate surveillance state whose capabilities are unrivaled by any totalitarian government of the past.
Snowden is a national hero, and he has given us perhaps our only chance to end the subversion of our democratic government by criminals. The Creepy, Long-Standing Practice of Undersea Cable Tapping

WE now know all a long he was owned by Wall Street just as the Bushes & Clinton's! Sadly PROGRESSIVES FELL FOR HIS BS & I think of him as bad relationship where deep down the woman knows he will never commit but will accept crumbs just to keep the relationship going. |

17. I believe some were/are paid trolls used to divert attention from the actual spying and
have it focused on the one who leaked it. Call me Captain Obvious, but it needs to be repeated. The story quickly focused on Snowden and away from the spying, it was pretty clear to those who bother to think. Because we allowed the narrative to change we all but guaranteed to quash future whistle blowers from blowing the whistle.

15. If facts become 'hyberbolic nonsense' we will be in an Orwellian nightmare. But surprisingly
despite all the propaganda and scare tactics we have been subjected to, in an attempt to create a world where war criminals and economic criminals are either 'just immoral, not criminal' or 'patriots under pressure' while honest, ethical men and women of character are the bad guys, the American People STILL are not buying it.
Snowden is viewed as a Whistle Blower, not the criminal our government has tried to paint him, by a majority of the American people, and a hero to many around the world. And another post that refutes NOTHING in the OP, mainly because it is irrefutable information and the truth doesn't change. |

7. The Goal of Wholesale Surveillance
![]() The goal of wholesale surveillance, as (Hannah) Arendt wrote in “The Origins of Totalitarianism,” is not, in the end, to discover crimes, “but to be on hand when the government decides to arrest a certain category of the population.” And because Americans’ emails, phone conversations, Web searches and geographical movements are recorded and stored in perpetuity in government databases, there will be more than enough “evidence” to seize us should the state deem it necessary. This information waits like a deadly virus inside government vaults to be turned against us. It does not matter how trivial or innocent that information is. In totalitarian states, justice, like truth, is irrelevant. Chris Hedges, The Last Gasp of American Democracy Thank you for another outstanding OP, woo me with science. KBR. |

49. It's getting harder for them for sure. What was revealed is what people are interested
in, how their rights are being violated, not in the messenger other than to be thankful there are people like Snowden, courageous enough to stand up when it is needed.

Often heroes are not well known.

12. K&R! This post deserves hundreds of recommendations!
I like this. "We live in a sweeping corporate surveillance state whose capabilities are unrivaled by any totalitarian government of the past."
Unrivaled. The United States used to warn us about the East German Stasi. The Stasi was bad. No doubt. But the surveillance capabilities were nowhere near what the NSA routinely does to ordinary, innocent American citizens. And remember, the United States is not supposed to have a totalitarian government. |

13. Thank you for the list
A sad, sad obituary of liberal thought and freedom. I can only hope we can get it back.
The hawks among us, Dem and Repug alike, love to say "Freedom isn't Free." They usually say that as an excuse to start another war. But what it really means is you can't sit on your ass and trust your leaders not to abuse power. Never, not in the entire history of mankind, has greater governmental power over its citizens led to greater freedom. We must fight to maintain our rights, or see them washed away, be it in a great flood, or more likely, by steady erosion over time by fear and greed. |

for the Oligarchy.

40. Let's take a look at your logic. You say "just the facts", which first of all would be a little
audacious for you to think that you have been blessed with recognizing the "facts". None of which you've proven yourself but you believe in someone else's "facts". It's understandable that one needs to choose a side, but you choose the side of authoritarianism to believe. You choose the side of the NSA/CIA Black State that has an unlimited budget and no oversight.
I choose the side of skepticism. I believe that with an unlimited budget and no oversight that the NSA/CIA Black State would do whatever they can get away with. I think that those that despise whistle-blowers, journalist, and protestors, do so because they live in the denial that their chosen authoritarian gods will be good to them. Gen Clapper might use his unlimited power for goodness if we are lucky, but in doing so, he may nullify our liberties and freedoms. Authoritarians are willing to give up their freedoms and liberties for the promise of a little security. They are fools. |

45. Good for you
All that ,,, still doesn't explain the lack of warrants ,,,,,,, seems you have a problem separating facts and opinion,, in such case it would be wise not to try to apply your logic.

47. I have searched and found no warrants,,,,,,,
concerning this matter therefore I claim there is none....... but if you know of some please share with the rest of us. Hard for to show you thingys that don't exist. Your logic is becoming much more and more clearer to me. but I understand how hard it is to defend a position that is not supported by any Truth.

36. Oh, that quaint old document?
No, see, all those so-called rights? There's an invisible "Escape Clause Amendment" that reads, "None of this is any good if we're really scared, or if the right people want We the People to be scared." That's why you libruls get confused about all that "due process" and "probable cause" stuff. It's of no force or effect if there's enough PH34R.
