BOSTON (CBS) A pit bull hit by a freight train last week is being credited with saving its owners life.
Christine Spain of Shirley was walking home from a friends house on May 3 when she collapsed on the tracks, according to the MSPCA.
Spains son, Boston Police Officer David Lanteigne says the train engineer told emergency responders that her 8-year-old pit bull named Lilly managed to pull her off the tracks to safety as the train approached.
The engineer said as he was coming up, he saw the dog pulling her off the tracks. But there wasnt enough time, Lanteigne told WBZ-TVs Jim Smith. He then saw the dog come around between the train and my mom and take the hit of the train.
The dog suffered a broken pelvis and a right front leg injury that was so severe, doctors needed to amputate the leg.

Not surprising however. Pits are incredibly rugged and durable dogs. It was that, plus their gentle disposition, that led the AKC to declare them to be the best family dogs for decades. They good stand the roughhouse and play of kids and still come up licking their faces.

(29,063 posts)As Mark Twain once said "The difference between a man and a dog
is that if you pick a dog up and feed it, he won't bite you".
So glad to hear of this, especially since pit bulls are so often
unfairly maligned.

(14,881 posts)I hope her owner recovers from her issues. Perhaps seeing Lilly's permanent damage will remind her daily of how much she is loved and how much she owes it to Lilly to stay sober...
