and when all the evidence has come in, everyone will know that. They even put a black cop on TV to show his support for the six.

(82,587 posts)Police union? What did Freddie Gray do wrong? And was it so very wrong that he deserved to die within minutes? Where, at last, is your humanity?

(51,308 posts)My mom, 88, watches the news with me and continues to ask me, "WHY, did they go after him in the first place???!!"
They keep saying "they made eye contact"...uh, does that mean I cannot look at a cop?
WTF?
WHAT did he do wrong that got their attention and why is no one asking this question in the news media?

(51,308 posts)I know they were really booked.
The union will have them bailed immediately however.

(51,308 posts)Not to fat shame, but come on. So many overweight cops?
Steroids perhaps, or just plain doughnut eating idiots.
I've taken the side of cops on this forum. I know cops...dated a few lol.
But this Baltimore situation is so obviously wrong on every level. I find it very upsetting.
I can only hope justice will prevail. But that won't bring Mr. Gray back.
In my hometown, we have a cop coming up on charges for the killing of an unarmed black man. The trial starts in July. The police chief ( a black man) immediately threw the idiot off the force. I wonder what will happen. My sweetheart at the time (white female police officer) and I disagreed on this. Needless to say, we are not together anymore lol.
Police violence is out of control. When the killers of Eric Garner got off, I pretty much gave up.
Something has to change. But will it?

(34,648 posts)They have never been under this nation wide scrutiny and it comes in blue areas and red areas, so no one can say that simply voting will solve it. I think it's crunch time. People are planning to film cops everytime they see an interaction.

(51,308 posts)killer cop.
He was a dog pound employee before he became a cop.
Scary on so many levels.

(67,077 posts)That's what police "unions" do. That's essentially their sole purpose.

(154,021 posts)they are to defend them from any and all liabilities
If the FOP did not, why bother paying dues?
It is not just FOP where lawyers are there to do that job. In my mind it does not speak as to guilt or innocence, it speaks to SOP.

(154,021 posts)these officers have been indicted, they have not been convicted. They are innocent until proven guilty In my mind they are guilty as can be, but they have a right to their day in court.
As to the teacher's union, if they have a lawyer on retainer, you betcha... it is part of why you pay fees as a union member.
Locally we had a few officers go to jail, one to state prison, he has 4 years to go, for sexual assault. It got weird. The DA did the prosecution, and like Baltimore the CITY and the FOP lawyers had to defend the officers. Locally it is known as the POA for accuracy sake.
This is the way the system works.
By the way, I could not be part of the jury. As I said, in my mind they are guilty. But BEFORE the legal system, they deserve a muscular and good defense. (And they'd better get it, or the appeals if they get convicted will be very easy).

PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)Obviously, cops always will say cops did nothing wrong. Not a problem of the Union, it is what the union is supposed to do. The balance is the non-union management of the employees enforcing standards of conduct and disciplining per union contract.

(90,634 posts)the ones who decide if the police did something wrong or not, and by them making that comment, as representatives of the police, says exactly what is wrong with the police force.

(9,610 posts)The Union are the cops though. If there is something wrong with how the cops view things, it will show in the actions of the Union.

(7,535 posts)that was a horrific mistake on the union's part and it really showed everyone why the culture of the Baltimore police is viewed as corrupt in the eyes of the public in their city....

(10,044 posts)so many times, and thinking to myself, what a handsome guy (I'm white and very old), but not dead.
I wonder if his main crime was being handsome while black. Maybe some of them are jealous. Maybe Freddie was popular with the ladies, maybe this, maybe that, but he was nice-looking.
Also, maybe I'm wrong.

(22,165 posts)A healthy young man is dead ... one they apparently head no legitimate reason to detain ... and he is DEAD.
Someone did something effing wrong ... a healthy young mans spine does not spontaneously "sever"
It is insulting and enraging to hear "they did nothing wrong"
